Affirmative Measures – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment

The Team

You will join the Indigenous Electoral Participation Program (IEPP) team. A team of enthusiastic and passionate people who are committed to ensuring eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can actively participate in our democracy. The team supports these opportunities by promoting in communities, enrolment to vote, voting during electoral events and opportunities to work during an electoral event.

The Opportunity

You will play an important part in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australian elections. You will be involved in every aspect of how culturally appropriate electoral services are planned, developed, and delivered in Northern Territory.

Your knowledge and expertise will help the IEPP to succeed in making Australian elections more accessible for First Nations people. You will be involved in ensuring culturally appropriate electoral services are planned, developed and delivered in Northern Territory, while helping to build and grow important partnerships for the AEC with, State Government agencies, Community based organisations and other local partners.

To excel you’ll have:

  • Experience in delivering voter education sessions and enrolment activities.
  • Ability to provide community engagement reports after each community visit to support AEC’s monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Experience in procurement of partners in Technology One and invoice payments.
  • Experience in program management and engagement of Community Electoral Participation Officer’s (CEPO) staff members in the IEPP team.
  • Demonstrating ability in relationship management, to effectively communicate with CEPO staff members, government agencies and community organisations.
  • Understanding of local challenges to Electoral Participation, liaising with partners to arrange meetings with communities.
  • Experience in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships, both internal and external.
  • Ability to develop other staff members with skills and expand their experience, while giving advice and guidance on their responsibilities.

Affirmative Measures - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment

The Affirmative Measures - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment process is open only to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who meet the criteria below.

To be eligible to apply for this role, you must:

  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent or identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be accepted by community as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage will only be required from candidates who are found suitable at the end of the process.

The AEC will consider allowances in some circumstances, however evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status is likely to include the following:

  • a letter signed by the Chairperson of an incorporated Indigenous organisation confirming that the applicant is recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, or
  • a confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent document executed by an Indigenous organisation.

Note: The need to provide confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is not required as part of the application process. Confirmation will be requested prior to the onboarding process.

Eligibility

  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this role.
