Job description

About the role

NOTE: These roles are based in Hobart, Tasmania.

We need power system engineers with strong technical capabilities, great communication skills and imagination.  Specifically, we are looking to fill a number of roles across two distinct disciplines:

  • System Performance Engineers to help design and coordinate the dynamic performance of our evolving network, including existing and future assets connected to it.
  • Network Planning Engineers to help design our future transmission network including the location and arrangement of new connection points for a variety of different end-users (consumers and generators).
About Us

TasNetworks is the Transmission and Distribution Network Service Provider in the state of Tasmania.  We own, operate and maintain over $3.5 billion in assets and deliver competitive electricity supply services to more than 295,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers.  As the Jurisdictional Planner, TasNetworks is not only playing a significant role in helping facilitate operation of the energy market today, but is also at the forefront of preparing the network to help integrate future developments including significant renewable energy generation projects and hydrogen production facilities.  We live and work by our vision ‘to be trusted by our customers to deliver today and create a better tomorrow’.

Tasmania has set ambitious goals aimed at growing the local economy as well as supporting the energy transition now underway across the National Electricity Market.  The Tasmanian Renewable Energy Target (TRET) requires the installation of approximately 3,000 megawatts of new wind generation by 2040, with at least half of the equivalent energy production to be delivered by the end of 2030.  This will be supported by the installation of additional interconnector capacity between Tasmania and Victoria in the form of a new HVDC link (Project Marinus), as well as significant AC network reinforcements across our transmission network.  We are currently planning for all of these future developments as well as managing day to day operation of the existing network, which features ever increasing amounts of Consumer Energy Resources.

In simple terms, our role is to help turn an ambitious plan, an exciting future, into reality.  We will do this with a focus on power system security and reliability, our impact on power bills for electricity consumers, and our footprint within the Tasmanian environment.

About you

With a minimum of 7 years’ experience, you will have qualifications, demonstrated skills, and proficiencies addressing many of the below requirements.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems) with industry experience to demonstrate proficiency in one or both of the specific disciplines outlined above.
  • A well-developed understanding of the National Electricity Market and the relevant sections of the National Electricity Rules.
  • High levels of proficiency with industry standard software packages, most critically PSS/E.  Performance Engineers should also be familiar with PSCAD.
  • A demonstrated ability to work on individual tasks, as well as in teams, to deliver high quality outcomes that are ‘on time’ and ‘on scope’.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Highly preferable

  • Understanding of regulated transmission networks and associated rules requirements.
  • Familiarity with a variety of OEM’s operating within the Australian industry.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of power system technologies including primary and secondary substation assets, renewable energy systems, high voltage direct current transmission, and FACTS devices, including their representation within power system analysis software packages.
  • Familiar with the identification and formulation of network constraints and the use of ‘constraint equations’ by AEMO.
  • Understanding of transmission network protection systems, including the application of Emergency Frequency Control Schemes and more specialised System Protection Schemes.
