We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with Clinical Trials experience and chemotherapy compounding experience to step into a Senior Pharmacy Technician role to continue development of Pharmacy Technician competency in Clinical Trials activities and expand scope of practice for Pharmacy Technicians in Clinical Trials, whilst providing support in managing the day-to-day operations associated with the Peter Mac Clinical Trials Pharmacy Service. Prior Senior Pharmacy Technician experience or people leadership experience is highly desirable.

Position Summary

To participate as an active member of the Clinical Trials Pharmacy team providing support in managing the day to day operations associated with the Clinical Trials Pharmacy service.

To supervise and coordinate training of Pharmacy Technicians in Clinical Trials under the direction of the Senior Clinical Trials Pharmacist managers. To support the development and update of Clinical Trials policy and procedures. Work collaboratively with other grade 4 Pharmacy Technicians and pharmacy managers to build sustainable process improvements thus ensuring the ongoing competency of the Pharmacy Technician workforce and streamline processes between Clinical Trials and Cytosuite Pharmacy.

Essential Requirements

  • Completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course or equivalent
  • Demonstrated leadership, negotiation & decision making skills
  • Experience in staff education, training, supervision &development
  • Proven mentoring and leadership skills
  • Proven organisational and delegation skills
  • Proven skills in manufacturing and complex aseptic preparation
  • Advanced computer skills with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Proven attention to detail and accuracy
  • Previous Clinical Trials experience
  • Ability to adapt within a high pressure environment
  • Willingness to work under the direction or supervision of a pharmacist as a member of the Clinical Trials pharmacy team in accordance with legislative requirements including Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP), NHMRC and SHPA requirements.
  • Willingness to be flexible in working hours, including participate in weekend work and on-call.

  • 3 years full time hospital pharmacy experience

1. Provision of technical support to Clinical Trials Pharmacy

•    To support manufacture and preparation of investigational products including aseptic and genetically modified organism (GMO) products;
•    Implement a competency framework for trial technician dispensing of clinical trial prescriptions and inventory management according to pharmacy procedure, ethics approved protocol and hospital requirements;
•    Ensure accurate and comprehensive drug accountability records are maintained according to the provision of the study protocol and GCP;
•    Oversee stock management of all investigational drugs including ordering and processing shipments, storage and destruction or return to supplier;
•    Support the implementation of pharmacy manual updates & protocol amendments
•    Assist in the development and update of Clinical Trials Pharmacy procedures;
•    Plan and assist with Clinical Trials monitor visits, audits and regulatory inspections;
•    Participate in data collection for audit, KPI generation, quality improvement or research purposes;
•    Ensure all documentation is kept up to date and archived according procedure, following legal requirements for the retention of pharmaceutical and other records;
•    Support preparation of invoices;
•    Prepare financial and activity reports and audit results as necessary;
•    Support the development and review of dispensing procedures for Cytosuite
•    Support the implementation and maintenance of electronic drug accountability recording and tracking systems including nCOUP

2. Management and supervision of staff- active participation in staff education and training   

•    Oversee the day to day technician-related operations within Clinical Trials pharmacy in collaboration with relevant pharmacist managers;
•    A versatile weekly roster for Pharmacy Technicians appropriate for the daily work plan in Clinical Trials is maintained, and annual leave requests are evaluated for rostering requirements
•    Supervise, support and mentor Pharmacy Technicians to perform their duties and meet competency requirements for Clinical Trials;
•    Monitor the performance of team members. Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to individual team members in a timely manner;
•    Support the orientation, training and development of Pharmacy Technicians within Clinical Trials
•    Support the orientation and training of investigational product manufacturing within Clinical Trials & cytosuite;
•    Ensure mandatory competency and Professional Development reviews, are completed;

3. Continuous Quality Improvement and Infection Control   

•    Follows established organisational and departmental procedures and guidelines according to the International Conference on Harmonisation for Good Clinical Practice
•    Actively participate in or help coordinate sustainable and continuous improvements processes within the Clinical Trials Pharmacy service to optimise operational efficiency.
•    Assist in collating clinical trial quality assurance and workload statistics;
•    Complies with Infection Control policies and procedures 100% of the time;
•    Comply with Pharmacy Board legislation, National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards and other relevant regulatory requirements;

4.Occupational Health & Safety   

•    Complies with Peter Mac policies to maintain a safe workplace.
•    Complete incident reports 100% of the time and responds appropriately to OH&S incidents.

5.Contribution to department and organisation   

•    Plan and implement departmental service delivery improvements.
•    Active contribution to the Pharmacy Management team
•    Participation in On-call and weekend rosters
