The Department
Alfred Health’s Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.
The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter streams based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, infectious diseases, haematology/oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.
The physiotherapy service at Caulfield Hospital provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and residential care services. The Physiotherapy Service provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. In addition to these services, the department is also responsible for the day to day management of the hydrotherapy pool which has more than 250 clients per day accessing it services. The physiotherapy department is organised in three functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and Aged Care.
The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy, through clinical research.
The Alfred Health Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Health Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash Universities and in this role provides core and elective clinical placements for more than 50 undergraduate physiotherapy students.
The Position Summary
This Senior Physiotherapist (Musculoskeletal) primarily services acute orthopaedic patients but can extend to include services to burns and plastics, subacute orthopaedics, amputees and spinal cord injuries across in and outpatients. The Senior Physiotherapist (Musculoskeletal) is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of physiotherapy services to the units, and programs assigned to the Senior Physiotherapist, which is dependent upon the specific clinical, in consultation with senior clinician(s) and stream leader at the level of a developing expert.
The Senior Physiotherapist (Musculoskeletal) is also responsible for the education of physiotherapy students and the supervision and professional development of Grade 1 staff assigned to their units. The Senior Physiotherapist (Musculoskeletal) has an important role in contributing to the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through good leadership, teamwork and communication. There may be potential for rotations within these clinical areas between the Senior Physiotherapy (Grade 2) staff, depending on staff capacity, the need for staff development and the requirements of the department. The position may involve work at any of the 3 sites across Alfred Health including Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham hospitals. The position may also include evening or weekend work as overtime or for time off in lieu of working the weekend.
Skills and Experience Required
Current and unrestricted registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia via AHPRA
Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in the provision of physiotherapy services in the area of physiotherapy in the management of Acute Musculoskeletal patients
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the provision of physiotherapy practice to patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions
Demonstrated ability to plan and manage a caseload, including the coordination of other staff and students.
