Your day as a Senior Policy Advisor, Financial Management Legislation

Your typical day-to-day work includes a mixture of:

  • Preparing advice on application of financial management legislation, regulations and related policy
  • Developing and maintaining systems and processes that ensure the regulations, policies, frameworks and guidance remain up to date and fit for purpose
  • Engaging with stakeholders internally and across the NSW public sector to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, capability building and to ensure effective consultation on the teams work program
  • Leading projects to create frameworks, policies, guidance and tools that make financial management legislation in NSW public sector easy to understand and practical to apply.

Some key projects and initiatives upcoming for the Financial Management Legislation team in the next 12 months include:

  • A post-implementation review of the Government Sector Finance Act 2018 (GSF Act) – working with other areas within Treasury, with NSW government agencies and equivalents in other jurisdictions across Australia to evaluate whether the GSF Act is achieving its objectives, make recommendations for improvement and commence delivering those improvements.
  • Developing frameworks and guidance to support the sector manage their obligations under the GSF Act and to promote effectiveness, transparency, and accountability.

Achieve success as Senior Policy Officer, Financial Management Legislation

In this critical role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW. 

You will be successful in this role if you have: 

  • An understanding of, or the demonstrated ability to develop an understanding of, the public sector environment, the policy process and the relevant statutory requirements that underpin NSW Treasury’s operations
  • An understanding of, or the demonstrated ability to develop an understanding of, agency and whole of state level financial management, budgeting, financial reporting and annual reporting in a public sector context
  • The ability to deliver policy initiatives, manage multiple stakeholders and provide accurate and evidence-based policy analysis and advice
  • A passion for building the NSW public sector’s capability in relation to financial management legislation
  • Ability to clearly convey technical and complex information and analysis in different ways (verbal, written and visual) appropriate to the audience and its purpose
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive culture and encouraging diversity of thought.
