About the Opportunity
To provide research capacity and resources to the Academic head of ICAMHS research and the Infant Child & Adolescent Mental Health service with the aim of improving outcomes for children and adolescents. It is envisaged that this position will provide research support that will facilitate clinical research including supporting clinicians and seamless translation of research evidence to clinical practice and policy where relevant, in a preventative framework that would improve outcomes for children, young people and their families.What You'll be Doing
The Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) plays a central role in supporting the Head of the Academic Unit of Child Psychiatry South Western Sydney in managing a large research program supported by several grants. The unit has a wide range of research interests in perinatal, infant, child and adolescent mental health including refugee mental health, developmental surveillance and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, and Tourette Syndrome, integrated care including First 2000 days child and family hubs, and developing and evaluating equitable service models for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and socially disadvantaged populations.The SSO plays a central role in the technical design of studies, the development of methodologies, oversight of data management (databases, cleaning and organizing data), devising and implementing statistical analyses, presenting findings and interpreting the results. The SSO will maintain and extend his/her skills in methodology and statistics by undertaking informal or formal further training. SSO requires a high level of expertise and experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, psychometrics and complex modelling. The SSO will provide support, advice, mentoring and in-service training to other staff and students to improve the overall level of skills in methodology and statistics in the unit, the Mental Health Service and the wider LHD.The SSO may play an active role as a senior collaborator or leader in one or more projects of the unit. The SSO will assist in managing the large number of research grants, research projects and programs and collaborative research networks of the unit. The SSO will assist in managing systems of administration, documentation, monitoring and reporting in relation to the research program and other major functions of the Academic Unit of Child Psychiatry South-West Sydney (AUCS). The SSO will play an active role in developing the research infrastructure, strategies for obtaining funding, statistical capacity and overall productivity of the unit. SSO will foster collaboration in research within the LHD as well as nationally and internationally.Where You'll Be Working

To be considered for this position, please ensure you address the selection criteria as thoroughly as possible. * Higher degree doctorate (PhD) or Post-graduate degree in science or equivalent in statistics or a discipline in health, behavioural or social science in which statistics is a central skill with practical research experience and expertise in advanced applied statistical modelling.
  • Capacity to oversee databases and proficiency in analysing data by using at least two relevant packages, that is, SAS, STATA, SPSS, M-PLUS, MLwiN, NVivo or equivalent programs and/or demonstrated evidence of a capacity to master these programs with further training.
  • Demonstrated experience in the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in complex sample designs (e.g. hierarchical linear models, fixed effects analyses, structural equation modelling, latent growth curve modelling).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in two or more of: epidemiology, biostatistics, psychometrics and statistical modelling.
  • Demonstrated experience in health and multidisciplinary research environment in Australia and related legislation, codes, and guidelines relevant to clinical trials, research ethics, and data management, including the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, relevant privacy acts and guidelines, the Human Tissue Act.
  • A proven ability to support teams in attracting substantial external research funding (including funding from competitive grant schemes), have capacity to produce high-level reports for refereed journal publication of high repute in relevant disciplines, and summaries/ briefings to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, such as negotiation and report writing applicable in both a research and administrative context.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical, and complex problem-solving skills with capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines in timely manners while maintaining high-level detail and quality.
  • Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.
