THE HEART RESEARCH INSTITUTE is a centre of excellence in cardiovascular medical research affiliated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney located in Newtown, Sydney. Our research is to understand the origins and mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and heart failure, and the contributions of diabetes and thrombosis.

Interested applicants will be joining a dynamic research program in the new Centre for Heart Health Research Group of HRI, headed by Professor Julie McMullen (Research Scientist, HRI) involving collaborative research with local and international research groups.
Senior Research Officers (SRO) play a major role in producing nationally competitive peer-reviewed grant applications, develop their own projects and submit their own grant applications. In addition, SRO’s assist the Group Leader with preparing and submitting manuscripts describing research to which they have contributed or helped supervise. You will also have high-level problem-solving skills and the ability to function productively, efficiently, and autonomously.
The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal. There is likely to be some interstate travel to Melbourne for training purposes involved in the role.

Essential criteria – you will have:
- A PhD degree in a relevant area of medical science
- 3-5 Years or more experience in a similar role
- Experience in performing biochemical and molecular assays e.g. qPCR, Western blotting
- Experience in cell biology, animal models and animal handling
- Experience with statistical analysis
- A strong interest and commitment in translational research and producing good quality publications
- High levels of motivation and the capacity for independent work
- Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
- A reasonable number of publications (5 - 10) as first author
- Significant contribution and experience with grant applications
- Significant experience in supervising students
- Demonstrate an ability to meet deadlines without compromising close attention to detail and accuracy.
Desirable criteria – you will have:
- Experience in models of cardiac disease and assessment of heart function in mice (e.g. Langendorff, echocardiography)
- Surgical techniques in mice
- Experience with omics techniques (transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics)
- Confocal microscopy experience
- Experience with gene therapy techniques, drug delivery
