Job description

This is a pool recruitment process (Ref 00969). This pool will run for a period of twelve (12) months and may be used to fill ongoing fixed term contracts, secondments and acting/relieving opportunities (full and part time).

There is currently one (1) full-time position available as a six (6) to twelve (12) month contract/secondment opportunity with the possibility of extension.

A second contract/secondment opportunity is likely in the near future.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

These positions are part of a small team of lawyers who provide high level legal advice to specialised operational areas of WA Police such as Proceeds of Crime, Financial Crime, Serious and Organised Crime and the Special Operations Application Unit.  Each Senior Solicitor position requires a highly skilled and experienced lawyer who can manage a number of challenging and competing priorities in a dynamic environment with a demonstrated ability in complicated statutory interpretation such that they are able to work across multiple areas of policing law.

SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITE

It is a requirement that the position holder is successful in obtaining and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 or 2 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position. Only Australian Citizens are eligible to hold and maintain the NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 or 2 security clearance. Any applicants who are currently not an Australian Citizen must be aware that this is an essential requirement to fulfil this position (please refer to the attached position description). Whilst there is nothing to preclude applicants from applying for the position if they have not yet been granted Australian Citizenship, applicants who are successful should be aware that they cannot be appointed unless they are in the process of applying for Australian Citizenship and are eligible to become an Australian Citizen prior to appointment.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Please ensure you complete, sign and scan the Integrity Check Consent Form (refer attached) and submit it along with your application (the Integrity Check Consent Form is not required for current WA Police Force employees).

Applicants are asked to address the following nominated work related requirements in no more than two (2) pages:

  • Ability to conduct complex legal research - Undertaking significant and complex legal research in a law enforcement environment. Providing significant and complex legal advice and information on the law applicable to policing.
  • Analytical & conceptual skills - Researching, evaluating and advising on significant and complex legal issues. Understanding, interpreting and applying legal principles, legislation and policy guidelines to provide significant and complex legal advice.

Applicants are also required to submit a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Your CV should provide enough detail (dot points are sufficient) to allow the selection panel to assess your skills, experience and qualifications relevant to the Key Accountabilities of the attached Position Description Form.

The CV must also include the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can comment on the applicant’s ability to satisfy all of the Essential Work Related Requirements. Applicants should nominate at least one immediate (most contemporary) supervisor/manager unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Please note: For applicants deemed suitable, all Essential Work Related Requirements listed in the Position Description Form will be assessed at some stage during the selection process.

OTHER CONDITIONS

In addition to the above mentioned vacancy, a POOL is being created to fill future vacancies that may arise within the metropolitan area. This POOL will remain active for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial appointment. Applicants who are assessed as ‘suitable’ at the completion of this process, will be placed in the POOL and may be considered for future temporary vacancies as they become available.

Where an applicant in the POOL declines an opportunity, that applicant may forfeit their right to be considered before other suitable applicants who were identified to be less competitive.

Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for a position is not a current WA Police Force employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to these positions may be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
