The Analytical Services Branch consists of a team of over 100 staff based in North Ryde and Port Melbourne. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurement on a wide range of samples (including water, soil, food and pharmaceuticals). Performing a diverse range of tests (including elements, nutrients, organic contaminants and microbiological parameters). We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for a large set of private sector and government clients across the environmental, food and health sectors, enabling them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs. We also work closely with the tertiary education sector in Australia and have a number of international stakeholders.

The Technical Development section provides highly effective and timely capability development to meet new stakeholder requirements and provides capability of national strategic importance for emerging needs.

The opportunity

We are excited to be offering an on-going role based at North Ryde that will support the development and validation of new capabilities, methods and efficiency improvements through automation and process streamlining. The role will assist the Technical Development Manager in ensuring timely outcomes of new capability developments, methods and their implementation. This role involves method development and validation, streamlining laboratory processes as well as support of new capability development including accreditation requirements.

The Technical Development Officer role is highly analytical, engaging with staff across the laboratory and the associated support functions on the site.

Our ideal candidate

National Measurement Institute (NMI) is looking for a candidate with tertiary qualifications in science with an understanding, history of success and passion for both the technical and work processes of a laboratory operation. The successful candidate will seek to build leadership, interpersonal and communication skills and have a history of working well within a team. You will ideally have:

a minimum of 4 years relevant post-graduate experience
an understanding of laboratory quality systems requirements per ISO/IEC 17025
demonstrated expertise and hands on experience in Analytical Chemistry
demonstrated experience and ability to operate, maintain and trouble shoot problems with advanced lab instrumentation such as LC-MSMS, NMR, GC-MS or ICP-MS
a proactive approach that includes an enthusiasm for personal development and learning
the ability to develop collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
the ability and confidence to work independently or under limited guidance of leaders
knowledge of and commitment to APS values which includes fostering a workplace culture that is respectful & inclusive.

The candidate will be able to demonstrate a history of high performance in a large and complex laboratory environment. This includes research and development aspects, service delivery and process improvement. NMI is seeking a person who will bring a positive energy, exemplifying our Values. A solid knowledge of the principles of Good Laboratory Practice and laboratory Work Health & Safety are also essential to this role.

What you will do

This position is based at NMI North Ryde and is a full-time on-going position engaged in work that contributes significantly to the capability, strategic development and promotion of NMI’s offer to its key stakeholders.

You will report directly to the Technical Development Manager but will be working in collaboration with;

Other NMI senior section staff and managers
The Laboratory Services Units (North Ryde and Port Melbourne)
Business Development (BD) and Engagement Branch
Government and private sector
Universities and other research bodies
Quality & Safety Team, in particular the North Ryde Quality and Safety Managers

There will be significant opportunity for personal development and to engage with broader NMI, the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Resources, organising committees and forums.

In this role the candidate will:
Assist with Research and Development projects to address measurement issues and create new measurement process.
Undertake the development, validation and documentation of methods in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025, NATA and other accreditation bodies.
Work closely with laboratory staff to understand needs, share ideas and effectively train for handover of newly developed methods.
Assist with stakeholder engagement, both internal and external (tertiary education sector, industry, government).
Coordinate student placements per NMI and Department protocols, liaising with NMI management, the student and their education institution.
Support innovation in methodology and lab processes, including undertaking research and providing ideas for new capabilities and continuous improvement.
Develop an understanding of NMI’s business context and role within government
Represent NMI at conferences, technical forums and events, including presentations on NMI technical activities.
Eligibility

The successful candidate will have tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (ideally chemistry)

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Demonstrated capability in a range of analysis techniques in a wide field of chemical testing, using a broad range of highly sensitive and modern instrumentation, such as: NMR, IRMS, LC-DAD, LC-MSMS, TLC, GC-MS, LC-QTOF, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, SFA and DA, etc.
Demonstrated experience managing students and staff engaged in complex analytical research projects.
Ability to develop collaborative working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
Ability to deliver research outcomes e.g: reports, documented methods, validation and verification data in a timely manner through excellent organisational skills, teamwork and attention to detail.
