Job description

This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8 (1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).

Who are we?

Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation committed to providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services and community development within the Biluru (Aboriginal) community of the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) Region in the Northern Territory.

About the role

The SEWB Youth Worker will work with community to provide culturally safe and positive interventions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply effective communication techniques to build and maintain relationships with clients and colleagues, including those from diverse cultural backgrounds and linguistic needs, based on respect and trust.
  • Perform work within a legislative and ethical framework to ensure the provision of high-quality service delivery which supports the rights and interest of clients.
  • Undertake a range of administrative activities in line with the Funding Agreement and legislative requirements.
  • Create a safe learning environment that fosters participation and implement strategies to meet the requirements of clients with complex needs.
  • Support ongoing development and delivery of evidence based SEWB/MH strategies and practice through the facilitation of group work, and one on one mentoring support.

Essential

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to effectively engage and to provide support services to young people.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and history; and an understanding of social, health and wellbeing issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Demonstrated ability working autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues, standards, and trends in the delivery of mental health and social and emotional wellbeing services to Aboriginal people.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with clients, family members, carers, and other professionals from diverse cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare case notes and documentation of a high standard.
  • Proficiency in and commitment to the use of electronic information systems for the maintenance of clinical and service delivery records.
  • Current or previous experience working within the youth sector.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation guiding clinical practice for this position.
  • Qualification or working towards a qualification in Youth Work or equivalent Community Services.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service or Similar complex environment such as service industry or public administration.

What we offer:

  • 6 weeks annual leave per annum  
  • 5 days paid leave during our end of year shut down period (in addition to annual leave).
  • Salary packaging of up to $15,990 per annum.
