Our Client

The Young Animal Protection Society Inc (YAPS) is a not for profit organisation dedicated to caring for and finding new homes for abandoned dogs and cats. They also offer boarding facilities for these animals. Their mission is to deliver outstanding animal welfare services to Cairns and its neighboring areas. YAPS stands out as one of two animal shelters in the region offering these vital services to the community, and is proudly committed to being a no-kill shelter.


The Opportunity

As the Shelter Manager, you will be responsible for the operation of organisational objectives, day-to-day business functions, providing leadership to staff, and all HR-related matters. In addition to the general running of the shelter, the Shelter Manager will ensure compliance with State Legislation, Council regulations and organisational guidelines set by the Management Committee.


This position will suit a dynamic, resourceful and experienced manager with a passion for the welfare of animals and allied business practices.


Some of your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee all HR-related matters including recruitment, performance management, conflict resolution, rostering, and staff training and development;
  • Manage day-to-day activities related to animal care, including rehoming procedures, boarding facilities and health management;
  • Coordinate the acquisition, storage, and maintenance of supplies and equipment essential for shelter operations;
  • Serve as a liaison for YAPS with stakeholders, clients, and the community, maintaining effective communication and fostering positive relationships;
  • Develop, implement, and review policies and procedures to ensure compliance and efficiency in shelter operations;
  • Maintain the accuracy and functionality of the YAPS Information & Communication Technology (ICT) environment;
  • Develop budgets, monitor spending, and ensure financial probity in accordance with organisational guidelines;
  • Report KPIs to the Management Committee.
Your Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability to acquire skills in animal welfare, re-homing and pet boarding management;
  • Proven ability to lead and manage staff, applying best practices in HR, workplace health and safety, and ethical conduct;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to liaise, negotiate, present and report effectively;
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities, with a knack for prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines;
  • Sound computer literacy with experience in modern software for financial, resource and administrative management systems.
