  • Commencing salary for a Probationary Sheriff’s Officer is $64,619 pa + super and annual leave loading.
  • Successful candidates will initially be temporarily employed. Following successful completion of on the job/mandatory training, and a 12-month probationary period, employment may convert to ongoing and salary will progress to $70,694 pa + super and annual leave loading

About the role

The NSW Sheriff’s Office is a law enforcement, security and court agency that is responsible for protecting and serving the NSW Justice System.

Reporting to the Officer-in-Charge, NSW Sheriff’s Officers have an exciting opportunity to directly support NSW residents in having a positive and just experience with the law. Duties include; serving summonses and enforcing writs, warrants and orders issued out of the various courts. Other security duties involve maintaining the security of court complexes and the safety of people attending these complexes. 

This role is a public-facing customer service role, where strong communication, community engagement and creative thinking skills are valued and utilised. A dedication to transparency and a respectful, people-first approach is essential to ensure NSW Sheriff’s Office can provide high quality legal and court services to facilitate the building of safer, more just and inclusive communities.

There is flexibility with placement as a Sheriff’s Officer can be required to move between regional and urban centres to meet work demands, but also to diversify skillsets, daily responsibilities and provide room for leadership and development opportunities. What we’re looking for

We are looking for a mobile and flexible workforce to meet our changing operational needs. Sheriff’s Officers may be required to move between centres to meet work demands and must be willing to work flexible hours between 6:30am and 6:00pm.

To be successful in this position, you must display confidence, resilience, and meet high ethical standards. Having to undertake a wide variety of tasks the ideal candidate will possess excellent time management, communication, organisation, and personal skills. You will be able to think quickly on your feet and have exceptional decision-making skills.

To become a Sheriff’s Officer, you must have all the following:

  • a current NSW Driver Licence
  • a satisfactory National Criminal History Check (NSW Police fingerprint)
  • a current First Aid certificate
  • be physically and medically fit (pre-employment medical assessment)
  • acknowledge that you must successfully complete recertification training every 2 years (or as amended from time to time).

Important information about the recruitment process:

  • If successful after shortlist, you will be progressed to assessment via online platforms
  • Successful applicants who receive an offer will need to attend a 10-week training course at the NSW Sheriff’s Training Academy – Parramatta
  • The 10-week training course will include:
    • Morning tea & lunch provided
    • Regional recruits will be provided with accommodation & travel arrangements. 
  • All new Sheriff’s Officers will be enrolled in a certificate III in Government and must complete this within 12 months in order to be appointed to an ongoing position.
  • All new Sheriff’s Officers will be assigned to their initial centre for the minimum timeframe of their probationary year before being considered for any internal transfers unless business needs dictate otherwise.
