About the role

As a Shunter your work is physically and mentally demanding.

You'll be working in live rail yards at both Southern Cross and South Dynon helping support timetabled and maintenance required vehicles in all weather conditions. Shunters work on a rotating 24/7 roster with early starts, nights, weekends, and public holidays.

Under the direction of Lead Shunters and Yardmasters you will:

· Adhere to strict safety protocols and use a high degree of concentration when executing shunting duties.

· Couple and uncouple pilots and locomotives with carriage sets.

· Identify and report hazards and infrastructure irregularities.

· Lay points and give directions to train drivers into and out of rail yards

· Communicate clearly with relevant stakeholders in person, via radio and through trained hand signals.

· Maintain clean and safe workplaces.

· Complete in class and on the job training as well written and physical assessments to become qualified as a shunter.

About you

Our ideal candidate may have gained skills in rail, logistics, trades, construction, manual labour, or other frontline safety focused industries.

Above all you will demonstrate:

· Alignment to V/Line's values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

· Zero harm attitude working safely with others in a high-risk setting by recognizing and reporting hazards as they arise.

· Great communication skills that support quick thinking, taking instruction, conveying information over radio clearly and reporting to your Leads on safety matters.

· Successful completion of VCE is essential.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo pre-employment screening including, probity (police) checks, medical assessment, and Australian entitlement to work. Employees of V/Line are required to maintain a valid Working with Children Check Victoria (Employee) for the duration of employment.

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2019.
