Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio.

About The Role:

Leading the Site Water Team, you will be responsible for all Site Water management related activities and the facilitation of information sharing across functions to improve water related decision making.

Reporting to our Technical Service Manager (primary) and our Sustainability and External Relations Manager (secondary) you will manage the day to day operations of water dedicated deliverables.  This includes the collection and delivery of water data and providing planning direction on water impacting issues to other functions, such as water treatment planning, water conveyance planning, waste dump planning, geochemistry planning, and water collection.

Accountabilities will include:

  • Single point of contact for water management
  • Implementing key water strategy initiatives from Regional Water Planner and Technical Services Water function
  • Risk identification and management
  • Site Water Management Plan and Charter upkeep and implementation
  • Site Water Balance Goldsim model (data input, calibration, monthly reporting and communications)
  • Regulatory licensing / compliance and reporting (e.g. borefields abstraction) 
  • Water meter readings collation and analysis
  • Water Management Planning integrated with Regional Water Planner
  • Long term / business planning for water
  • Water conveyance / supply planning
  • Water treatment planning and performance management
  • Water Accounting Framework maintenance and reporting, annual savings and efficiency KPI development, performance tracking and trend analysis
  • Groundwater management
  • Mine waste water quality impact management (tailings and waste rock management)
  • Mine closure water management strategy

About You:

  • B.Sc./Eng. in Mineral Processing, Civil or Chemical Engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Aqueous Geochemistry or post graduate qualification for other undergraduate disciplines.
  • Post-graduate training, especially in water management, environmental management or civil engineering is a positive.
  • Knowledge of gold mining and processing operations and associated environmental risks and management systems.
  • Able to demonstrate technical competence through design and/or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas: Metallurgical processing, Tailings Storage Facilities, waste rock management, water dams, water balance, water treatment, mine dewatering.
  • Significant experience in water management related issues within the metals and mining sector. Experience in gold/copper mining will be an advantage.
  • Experience reading and interpreting water balance models (including volumes and chemistry). 
  • Technical understanding and experience of hydrology and hydrogeology including water treatment, groundwater supply, pit dewatering and mine depressurisation projects.
  • Experience with water modelling software. Prior experience with GoldSim, ModFlow, or PHREEQC is preferred.
  • Practical understanding of pumps, pipelines and fluid mechanics for design of water handling systems.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry, water treatment and tailings management strategies.
  • Proven track record in project execution and operation with demonstrated commitment to the successful implementation of projects.
  • Experience in the management and administration of budgets in a multifaceted organisation such as a multinational mining company.
  • Ability to problem solve through innovation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including cultural awareness and sensitivity, and ability to influence at all levels including Superintendents, Managers and Key Stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage a path to resolution despite conflicting goals of various functions and stakeholder.
  • High level of presentation and communication skills to effectively manage Site Water team meetings and facilitate cross functional collaboration.
