Job description

Sleep WA is a leading comprehensive sleep service providing excellence in sleep and respiratory medicine under Dr Jack Philpott (Respiratory and Sleep Physician). We operate out of various locations both in a diagnostic and therapy capacity.

We are currently taking applications for a health professional to join our team.

The individual would work initially in our outpatient day clinics, between both Rockingham (Waikiki Private Hospital) and Nedlands (Hollywood Hospital), to fulfil duties which mainly include seeing patients for CPAP therapy services. The role may also later expand to respiratory testing, home based sleep testing, sleep study analysis or sleep laboratory services including evening and overnight work. 

This position is part time (3-4 days a week). Monday and Wednesday are fixed working days, remaining days may be flexible. Shift times are 8.00am to 4.00pm or 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The successful candidate will have opportunities for further career development including the possibility of full time employment and flexible shift rotations. 

While experience in conducting sleep studies, respiratory testing and PAP therapy is highly regarded, we will provide the successful applicant/s with comprehensive training.

Selection Criteria:

  • Completed Bachelor of Science (BSc) or equivalent.
  • Current Senior First Aid or will be required to ascertain Senior First aid within the first 3 months of employment.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills and patient/customer services
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Can provide police and working with children clearance
  • Has a C-class license and reliable car 
  • Permanent resident/Australia Citizenship

Desirable

  • RPSGT qualification or equivalent
  • Experience working in sleep and respiratory science
  • Shift work experience (including night shift)

Job description: Sleep Scientist

The Sleep Scientist may be required to carry out tasks in a number of different fields including Sleep, Respiratory and PAP therapy disciplines. The Sleep Scientist may be involved more specifically in one field or working across multiple fields. During performance reviews, preferences for each field will be discussed and mutually agreed upon.

In addition to the above clinical component of the role, there may also be administrative components, including:

  • Assisting at reception and with billing patients;
  • Confirming future patient bookings;
  • General administrative duties (i.e. answering the phones/printing/photocopying etc).
  • Stock control and data entry

Below outlines some of the different fields offered at Sleep WA:

PAP therapy

The Sleep Scientist will work closely with patients who have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea or other forms of Sleep Disordered Breathing who have been referred for Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) and need to sleep with a machine connected to a mask to deliver varying positive pressures to their airway to maintain breathing during sleep. This may involve CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), APAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure), Bi-PAP (Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure) or Servo-Ventilation.

The Sleep Scientist may be required to see the patient a number of times to ensure good compliance with the machine and correction of their sleep disordered breathing.

Respiratory Testing

The Respiratory Technician independently carries out patient testing for a variety of tests/services including:'

  • Comprehensive Lung Function Tests;
  • Altitude Simulation Test;
  • Spirometry;
  • Mannitol Challenge Test;
  • Allergen Skin Prick Test;
  • 6 Minute Walk Test;
  • Correct patient use of Oxygen Concentrators;
  • Nasal Resistance Test;

Sleep studies:

The Sleep Scientist may be involved in working overnight in the in-patient laboratories conducting full PSGs, and/or working during the day in the out-patient services. The Sleep Scientist independently carries out patient testing which may include all or some of the following:

  • Setting up comprehensive PSG Home Based Sleep Studies;
  • Setting up Laboratory (In-Patient) PSG Sleep Studies;
  • Overnight monitoring of Laboratory PSG Sleep Studies;
  • Overnight monitoring of CPAP/Bi-PAP/Servo Ventilation Titration Studies;
  • Analysing PSG Sleep Studies (Laboratory and/or Home Based Sleep Studies);
  • Blue Light therapy;
  • Actiwatch to assist in diagnosis of Circadian Rhythm Disorders;
