Job description

Location: Canberra, ACT 

Part Time: Approx 25 hours per week.

Remuneration Range: $36.00 - $45.00 an hour + super  (dependent on skills and experience).

About the role:

The role of Social Skills Mentor and Inclusion Assistant requires a passion for social inclusion, empathy, ongoing professional growth, use of best practices and safe intervention frameworks to support clients to make progress towards their personalised goals.  

The role requires a sound knowledge and understanding of disability,  and demonstrated experience in supporting children and young people with additional needs. The role will require you to continue to work at various schools, client homes in the ACT and surrounding NSW regions, and at times remotely. This role will involve, but is not limited to, supporting clients to develop their executive functioning skills, pragmatic language, vocabulary, social conflict resolution skills, problem solving skills, flexible thinking and self agency. 

In addition to direct client support, your role will require the ability to write well structured, informative and professional progress reports to families and relevant third party stakeholders, such as the NDIS.

In addition to direct client engagement, your role will involve parent/caregiver collaboration, community and stakeholder engagement (teachers, support workers, other service providers) and relevant administration related to quality service delivery. 

Your role will also require strong time management skills, an ability to work independently and exceptional communication skills to support client engagement and independence. Our team requires a professional image,  a positive attitude and the ability to model team qualities such as respect, helpfulness, cooperation and consideration.

Qualifications and Base Requirement

  • Your minimum qualifications will be a Certificate III in Learning Support or Allied Health Assistance (or equivalent)
  • Preferably you've completed a relevant teaching tertiary qualification (education, allied health, social work, counselling)
  • Or, have 3 years relevant experience and have operated successfully in a similar role(s).
  • Working with our clients will require you to undertake regular local travel using your own personal and reliable vehicle. Travel will be reimbursed and you will have to maintain comprehensive insurance. 
  • This position involves working with children. Proof of a current Working with children/Vulnerable people check is mandatory and required. 
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certificate (or willingness to obtain)

Suitable applicants will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and understanding of disability,  and demonstrated experience in supporting children and young people with additional needs; 
  • A commitment  to, and experience with inclusive practice;
  • Highly effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to engage positively with colleagues, clients and relevant stakeholders;
  • Strong time management skills to independently manage all aspects of the workload;
  • The ability to apply professional knowledge, experience and training to assist with planning, organising and achieving outcomes within the relevant time constraints;
  • Initiative and the ability to handle a number of tasks concurrently;
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing situations;
  • An ability to provide progress reports and supporting documentation to stakeholders;
  • A readiness to foster the values and vision of SP Specialist Inclusion Services in the wider community;
