About the role

Mater Hospital Brisbane currently has an exciting opportunity for highly experienced, passionate Social Work Assistants to join the team. Based at the South Brisbane Campus, our Social Work Assistants position are in three different teams with a range of FTE available.

You will be joining a welcoming, friendly and professional team providing Social Work services across Mater Hospitals and will work closely with the multidisciplinary teams in varied caseloads. Our Social Work department has been nominated (Mater People’s Awards) two years in a row for leadership, innovation, and clinical excellence. Salary range: $32.23 - $33.66 (OO3) per hour plus superannuation and salary packaging.

Patient Travel Service- This is a full-time position permanent

The Social Work Assistant, Patient Travel Service, is responsible for coordinating and arranging transportation and accommodation for patients and their families under the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme. This role is critical in ensuring that patients receive the necessary medical care required while minimising the financial burden on the patient and their family.  The role works as part of the Social Work Assistant team and will also undertake broad Social Work Assistant tasks to support timely provision of care to patients.

Child Protection Service – This is a 0.43 (16.34 hours a week) permanent position

As a member of the Child Protection Unit team you will undertake a defined range of clinical administration and clinical support tasks under the delegation of the Child Protection Unit team to contribute to patient care. Ideally your hours will be worked across 3 days a week.

Adults Social Work team – This is a 0.6 (22.8 hours a week) in a contract until 30th June 2024

The Mater Hospital Social Work Assistant works in partnership with the Social Workers assisting patients, their families and carers in dealing with the emotional, social and practical issues that arise and in planning safe and appropriate discharge from the hospital. You will work across numerous clinical areas including Emergency Department, ICU, Oncology, and General Medical wards. Ideally your hours will be worked across 3 days a week.

What you’ll be doing

These positions are available across the department to support different teams including those in Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Mater Private and Mater Adults Hospital Brisbane. As a valued member of the team you will:

  • Assist patients and families with paperwork and processes
  • Communicate and liaise with Social Workers, patients, family and carers, and other staff
  • Liaise with external providers including community organisations, and government/non-government services
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings, relevant professional development activities and mandatory education
  • Undertake ongoing training and development activities as appropriate

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • Intermediate computer skills, including word processing
  • A high level of literacy and numeracy skills
  • A willingness to acquire specific competencies relevant to a Social Work Assistant and to participate in training
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work as part of a team
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills
  • Relevant education in either Health Services Assisting, Allied Health Assisting, or Community Services
  • Experience working in either Community Services, Aged Care, Disability Services or Healthcare environment OR
  • Previous experience working in a Customer Service environment
