STAFF SPECIALIST - ENDOCRINOLOGY | NORTHERN TERRITORY

Challis Recruitment is currently recruiting for our clients based in the Northern Territory for a Staff Specialist in Endocrinology to join their team.

The Position:

Provide high quality specialist care in Internal Medicine to patients at the Hospital, surrounding regions, and fringe areas of Western Australia and South Australia.

  • Provide strong leadership and manage all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department of Medicine, focusing on patient safety and quality of services.
  • Provide high quality safe inpatient, outpatient and outreach clinical services in Internal Medicine.
  • Initiate and partake in quality management activities, performance appraisal, personal and Departmental continuing education programs.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of and participation in teaching programs for junior medical staff, including advanced trainees and medical students.
  • Undertake Clinical Audit activities and research as appropriate.
  • Participate in relevant Hospital Committees and other administrative duties as required from time-to-time and provide advice to the Director of Medical and Clinical Services on matters relating to Internal Medical.
  • Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces
  • Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour

The Hospital:

The hospital is the major acute hospital for Central Australia with 136 beds, serving up to 60,000 people including visitors to the region. ASH provides a range of specialist services including General Medicine, Rehabilitation medicine, Palliative care medicine, Nephrology, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Surgery (including Ophthalmology, ENT and Orthopaedics), Psychiatry, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The range of clinical work is unique, with a strong focus on indigenous health and infectious diseases. The Hospital is a teaching hospital, and a campus of the Northern Territory Clinical School of the Flinders University of South Australia. Conjoint or honorary academic appointments have been made in the Department of Paediatrics, Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The Centre for Remote Health, a joint venture between the Charles Darwin University and Flinders University of South Australia is adjacent to the hospital.

The Hospital has also entered into a new affiliation with the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute for research and clinical services for cardiovascular disease and diabetics. A new building is being constructed on the campus to accommodate the Baker IDI Institute. The Hospital is accredited by the Northern Territory Postgraduate Medical Council on behalf of the Medical Board of the Northern Territory for intern and junior medical officer training and has an active clinical training program. It provides excellent clinical training opportunities and experience relevant to rural general practice and is an affiliated teaching hospital of the Universities of Sydney, New South Wales and Queensland.

Medicine

The Department of Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital includes in-patient admission units of General Medicine, Renal Medicine and Rehabilitation. Onsite consult specialties include Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Alcohol and Other Drugs and Cardiology.

There is an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit with Intensivist staff. Visiting Medical Specialities include: Dermatology, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Neurology and Thoracic and Sleep Medicine.

Our endocrinology and diabetes team at the hospital consists of two consultants (one permanent, two visiting) and two diabetes educators. Hospital work involves outpatient clinics (both diabetes and endocrinology), and ward consults of complex patients, and the registrar works closely with the diabetes educators.

The Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute provides a specialist diabetes outreach service to 10 remote communities across Central Australia, and also provides a diabetes clinic at Central Australian Aboriginal Congress in region. The outreach team consists of an Endocrinologist (visiting), diabetes nurse educator and registrar – visits also occur with the registrar and DNE. Outreach diabetes clinics involve complex patients, with multiple comorbidities, and can often occur in a diverse and sometimes challenging environment. It is an immensely rewarding experience, and unique to Central Australia.
