Your opportunity

As our Deck Cadet you will participate in a two-year Deck Cadet Sponsorship that will involve placement on multiple Merchant Vessels to assist you to achieve the 18 months sea-time that is required by AMSA before you can study to become a qualified Deck Watchkeeper. This is a sponsorship arrangement and not a permanent job role.

This position will require long periods at sea, with limited communication and work periods of 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Here’s how your impact will really count:

  • You’ll do bridge watchkeeping including celestial navigation, Meteorology, Electronic navigation systems, Tides & Sailings, Chart work, Passage planning, Chart & publications corrections.
  • You’ll do lifesaving & firefighting appliances maintenance, tank soundings, Security watches, Stability & structure calculations, medical duties, Customs, Immigration & legal forms, Audits & inspections.
  • You’ll participate in Pilotage operations, Shipboard Management & safety management systems along with mooring operations, Cargo operations, Deck maintenance.
  • You’ll follow shipping companies OHS, Drug & Alcohol policies & company guidelines, and complete Training and Guidance study workbook issued by college.
  • You’ll email a list of jobs performed on board to mentor fortnightly and follow instructions from Ships Captain and any supervisors.

What you’ll bring

  • A completed Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) Pre-Sea 
  • Ability to hold a Maritime Security Identification card (MSIC)
  • Ability to hold an AMSA medical certificate 
  • Be an Australian citizen who holds a current Australian passport.

  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with multinational crews
  • Capable of positive conflict resolution
  • Ability to multitask whilst following rules and processes
  • Committed to exceling during this demanding training program.
