The Payments Engineering resides in the Payments Service Utility and its purpose is to reward the trust of our customers by transforming the Payments services experiences provided by the Bank to 99.999% availability, greater agility and reliability.
Our team is composed of architects, engineers and technology leaders, who bring in the right mix of skills to enable this transformation. We also work very closely with our business and operations colleagues to support these services which are critical to the Australian and Global economy. Our team is also responsible to drive Engineering Governance, Continuous Delivery and key technological simplification pillars such as Cloud and Payments Event based architecture.

We are currently looking for Staff Engineer – Payments technology, who will be part of team in defining technical solutions for Merchant Technology initiatives in line with the Group Strategy. This entails ensuring that the product meets the safe, sound and secure standards, contribute to business-driven projects and programs to expand and enhance offerings for merchant and retail customers. This role reports to the Principal Engineer for Payments Technology and will include the below responsibilities (but not limited to):
Use advanced knowledge of system technologies and platforms and apply engineering principles and practices to achieve business outcomes. Support team members to build out core technologies and broaden system knowledge.
Provide strategic guidance and oversee medium complexity system engineering initiatives and solutions.
Develop strategic programs of work, including proof of concept developments.
Provide mentoring and technical assistance to other engineers on security, reliability, performance, maintainability, scalability and usability of technology systems.
Take ownership of a product or technical asset related to areas of expertise including end to end ownership of technical direction and execution and alignment to Group technology strategy.
Use strong interdisciplinary understanding of platform architectures to deliver systems that are seamlessly integrated, comply with technical requirements and deliver business outcomes.
Work with internal and vendor teams to build technical solutions in the Payments Tech Domain
Provide advanced knowledge and experience in the Batch Payments area to advise and assist business and delivery teams
Provide solution oversight on major programs of technology change in the space
Identify and recommend solutions to business or technical problems and support recommendations for endorsement in stakeholder forums
Work directly with key project stakeholders to ensure solutions are optimally defined to achieve business and strategic goals
We’re interested in hearing from people who have:
Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent IT degree
Extensive experience in building Payments Solutions
Experience with integration architecture
Knowledge of payments protocols and schemes: ISO20022
Demonstrated capability in delivering solutions that meet high targets in performance, availability, data integrity and security domains
Experience with Payment processing systems for high-volume payment types (e.g. Direct Entry and BPAY) - desirable.
IBM Mainframe and OPF Framework - desirable
Integration technologies such as IBM MQ, Confluent Kafka, API standards - desirable
Payments File Gateway Systems - desirable
