The Respiratory Medicine Department at The Children's Hospital at Westmead has up to 0.4FTE temporary Staff Specialist appointment available from 13th May 2024 to 2nd February 2025.
What you'll be doing

  • Areas of clinical priority will include providing clinical expertise in cystic fibrosis, asthma, chronic complex respiratory disorders and lung transplantation. Emerging priorities such as expertise in respiratory infectious diseases and managing children with respiratory disorders in an intensive care model will be highly desirable. The candidate should have excellent bronchoscopy skills. The appointed physician should be able to participate in the sleep on-call roster.
  • The candidate should provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • The successful candidate must have a strong research track record with publications in peer reviewed journals and grants. They should possess or have made substantial progress toward higher degree.
  • The candidate should demonstrate commitment to teaching.
  • Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff.
  • Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.
  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways and Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians and / or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award with recognised training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.
  • Proven clinical expertise in the management of children with respiratory disorders including particular training and expertise in the assessment and management of children with chronic complex respiratory disorders (cystic fibrosis, asthma, bronchiectasis), respiratory infectious diseases, managing children with respiratory disorders in the intensive care setting and lung transplantation.
  • Proven expertise in the performance and interpretation of flexible bronchoscopy and performance and interpretation of lung function tests.
  • Progressing toward or in possession of a higher degree in a relevant area and proven commitment to continuing education.
  • Proven track record in clinical research with supporting evidence and demonstrated commitment to teaching and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team
  • Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the
seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.
Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title (levels A to D) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the University Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Children's Hospital at Westmead appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for clinical matters.
