Pay Rate: Combined couple $100-$110k (single person $65-$75k)

Benefits: 2 bedroom furnished cottage, internet, vehicle for personal use, grocery allowance, fuel for personal use

Our client manages a cattle property in Cape York encompassing 200,000 acres of typical Cape land types, including savannahs, shrub lands, wild rivers and subtropical open forests. Typical of the area, the annual monsoon and cyclone season results in the station being cut off for weeks at a time, followed by months of dry hot weather when it is all hands on deck getting mustering and station upgrades done.  With a substantial portion of the property un-developed, there is a blend of feral and domestic cattle on the station that all have to be managed over the course of the year. There is ongoing property development in place, with water and fencing projects being an ongoing concern, as well as maintaining existing infrastructure. Our client has asked as to find a couple to live permanently onsite to assist the station owner and manager undertake the day-to-day management of a property of this size and treat it as if it is their own.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Undertake regular routine water and fence runs, making all required repairs as needed.
  • Keep on top of the supplement program to ensure livestock is getting adequate nutrients
  • Slowly chip away at the feral cattle herd during the dry season by mustering or trapping
  • Undertake routine repairs and maintenance of all station plant and equipment
  • Proactively maintain overall herd health throughout the year.
  • Proactively address feral pests as needed
  • Work closely with the manager to ensure all bookwork, including purchase order books, accounts with suppliers and stock-books, are completed on time.
  • Mustering on bikes to assist choppers. Working dogs welcome
  • Maintain positive relationships with the station manager, station owner and all subcontractors.

Desirable Skills and Attributes

  • Experience on northern Australian cattle stations and can cope with isolation
  • Experience mustering both domestic and feral cattle on bikes
  • High level of cattle husbandry skills
  • High level of mechanical and fabrication skills
  • HC/MC license, very highly regarded
  • Have an affinity with the northern Australian grazing industry, the people and animals
  • Honest, dependable, and reliable, with great communication skills
