Job description

The Opportunity: 

Does working for the leading medical publication in the southern hemisphere interest you?  

The  Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) is the southern hemisphere’s most
highly regarded and influential peer-reviewed medical journal and plays a
critical role in advancing medical research and discussion in Australia and
around the world.  The journal publishes high quality research and
commentary that has the potential to inform health policy or influence
practice across Australian health care. The Editor-in-Chief is Professor
Virginia Barbour.

The Role: 

We are currently seeking a Structural and Project Editor to work within a
talented editorial team. You will be involved in and have responsibility for
editorial processes including: 

  • Working closely with the Medical Editors and authors to prepare
    contributions to the Medical Journal of Australia for handover to
    production.
  • In depth editing of complex scientific content and commentary.
  • Managing key journal projects.

People who identify as being either of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
descent are particularly encouraged to apply. 

Training will be provided on specific journal policies and processes. 

Location:

Applications from anywhere in Australia will be considered. Flexible work
arrangements (remote, hybrid or working from home) are available:

  • Sydney applicants will be required to work in a hybrid arrangement
    between AMPCo's CBD office and home. 
  • Non-Sydney applicants will be able to work remotely with some visits
    to the office.
Remuneration:

Remuneration for this position will be determined after assessment of
relevant skills and experience.

What it takes

To be successful, essential criteria include: 

  • relevant and recent experience of editing in medical or scientific
    publishing;  
  • project management experience;
  • a good knowledge of health care issues within Australia;
  • effective communication skills and knowledge of English language
    and grammar; 
  • proven experience in working with academic publications; 
  • a high level of attention to detail, willingness to perform administrative
    tasks, and ability to meet tight publication deadlines; and
  • a collaborative approach and willingness to work as part of a team,
    as well as being comfortable with sharing ideas, and participating in
    meetings.

Experience in research and scientific editing is highly desirable.

AMPCo (a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian Medical Association) publishes the MJA and other products and owns the leading marketing database for the health care industry.
