About the Role

Located in Maitland/Woodberry, The Student Wellbeing Officer (SWO) role is designed to support and assist the students of Alesco Senior College to manage their life/school balance and continue their education.

The SWO is focused on student welfare and creating a source of support for students so that they may form meaningful and engaging relationships with the school and other staff.

In this full time role, successful applicants should be able to confidently:

  • Lead formal and informal meetings related to the welfare/wellbeing needs of the students/school e.g. weekly welfare meetings, regular meetings with the Head Teacher as well as ongoing communication with staff and students.
  • Participate in all school leadership meetings to ensure the program maintains the welfare / academic balance.
  • Make recommendations regarding the full range of practical services or program delivery solutions which may assist in dealing with student needs.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by supervisors or management.
  • Act as an advocate for students both internally and to external agencies.
  • Assist students in the development of goals, strategies, and planning to assist with their school/life balance.
  • When needed, refer students on to other agencies and supports.
  • Implement a student centred case management model.
  • Management of critical incidents on site including immediate risk assessments, contacting emergency services, and contacting guardians as necessary.
  • Design and implement individual or small group interventions.
  • Liaise and involve parents, carers and any support people/agencies in the development and wellbeing of the student, where appropriate and with the student’s permission.
  • Provide secular pastoral care in accordance with the student’s development using a young person centred framework, therapies, techniques and interventions.
  • Understand and comply with legislation and guidelines in accordance with professional and ethical standards of practice as an SWO.
  • Participate in the pre-placement interviews of new students to assist in selection for program participation as well as assist in maintaining students in completing the school program.
  • Participate in and facilitate wellbeing focussed school activities such as: school excursions and wellbeing week.
  • Professionally and ethically complete administrative tasks and reporting requirements.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality and ensure your role meets duty of care obligations.

About You

  • You already live by the values of Inclusion, Integrity and Innovation.
  • Minimum 2 years’ Experience in individualised or group support and case management with young people.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certificate and or training.
  • Diploma or higher qualifications in Human Sciences, Welfare, Youth Work, Social Sciences or Social Work.
  • Effective high-level communication, interpersonal, advocacy and conflict resolution skills
  • A demonstrated interest in Student Wellbeing with experience working with disadvantage and at-risk young people.
  • Knowledge of behaviour, psychological and wellbeing theories, and practices relevant to young people.
  • Proven innovative and imaginative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent collaboration and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of secondary schooling sector and adherence to all required current legislative instruments and guidelines including child protection and safety.
  • Experience in an alternative or independent education setting is desirable.
