About the Role

In this role you will support the Indigenous Affairs Editor to produce agenda-setting stories and investigations of national interest and meet the changing coverage and content requirements across all platforms. You will drive the vision for comprehensive, timely and innovative journalism. You will also have the opportunity to help manage the Indigenous Reporting Team, providing editorial and creative leadership.

The role will also include:

  • On a daily basis work with the Indigenous Affairs Editor to provide coverage of complex stories relevant to and about Indigenous Australians; producing material for all platforms which makes those issues more understandable to broad audiences.
  • Assign and brief national reporters filing across daily news to current affairs, suggesting angles, talent and follow up stories. Direct reporters and producers to achieve original and news-breaking output that follows a cross-platform and digital-first philosophy.
  • On a daily basis plan and communicate with all relevant stakeholders within ABC’s News Division, including executive producers, desk editors, state editors other key ABC staff, to ensure planning and production across all platforms is achieved at the highest standards.
  • Assist the Editor to manage the Indigenous Affairs Team, providing editorial and creative leadership that is culturally appropriate, adhering to editorial policies and divisional style guides.
  • Oversee production resources, crews, rosters, rollouts within budget.
  • As required, mentor and guide journalists to achieve comprehensive, timely and innovative journalism which delivers context and impact. Monitor performance and develop team capabilities.
  • In collaboration with the Editor provide strategic advice and information about the team and broader cross-divisional project opportunities.

About You

We are seeking a motivated Producer with extensive experience and ability in planning, gathering and producing innovative news and current affairs programming. You will have a high-level ability to apply strategic thinking in editorial planning to create impactful and distinctive journalism. You will also have superior organisational, planning and communication skills; excellent problem solving, time management and troubleshooting skills. You will have a strong grasp of current affairs, and the ability to translate issues comprehensively for audiences across a variety of platforms.

  • Proven significant ability to manage, influence and guide team members.
  • A thorough understanding of the digital news environment, including on-demand platforms and emerging social media trends. Experience working in a cross-platform filing environment is desirable.
  • Proven success in exercising high level editorial and creative autonomy and discretion, making immediate and sound decisions about content requirements under pressure.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resources.
  • Demonstrated high-level experience working in a team environment and under pressure.
