Job description

Salmon Enterprises of Tasmania (SALTAS) is seeking a highly skilled professional to join our management team at our Salmon hatchery in Wayatinah, Tasmania. 

Our hatchery's mission is to produce the highest quality Atlantic Salmon smolt and eyed eggs, and to run an internationally recognised and award-winning selective breeding program to produce healthier, better-growing fish whilst ensuring the highest level of environmental and economic sustainability, and animal welfare standards are maintained.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Reporting to the General Manager, this newly created position will allow you to apply your entrepreneurial flair and spearhead all sustainability initiatives linked to our operations.
  • You will be required to design and implement projects in line with our footprint reduction sustainability initiatives, including waste stream utilisation, beneficial re-use, recycling, solar, additional effluent filtration initiatives, community education and outreach.
  • You will be leading daily planning and involved in execution of position-related tasks within the organisation, including hands-on routines. These include management and maintenance of filtration systems and components, cleaning, mortality and cull processing, maintenance and other fish husbandry work.
  • You will coordinate sampling and assist with regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure data collection and entry onto FishTalk database and Excel, as well as maintaining supporting administrative tasks. 
  • Lead internal research towards continuous improvement in Sustainability activities
  • You will also be available to assist with any other operational requirements as needed. 

 

ABOUT YOU

Ideal candidates will be looking for a new challenge to further their career in aquaculture sustainability with a focus on continuous improvement and development. The position requires someone who is professional, driven and willing to get hands-on applying their technical skills.

You will:

  • Be highly self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Be enthusiastic, passionate about fish, sustainable re-use and a positive can-do attitude
  • Have proven project management skills and ability to work independently and in a team
  • Need a high level of competency and proven knowledge and experience working in the commercial aquaculture sector. Additional training will be provided as needed towards achieving mastery over each system, but we are looking for candidates with a strong base knowledge.
  • Have a proven ability to work and respond calmly and professionally under pressure
  • Be a good problem-solver who has a strong attention to detail.
  • be able to adapt to fast-paced changing conditions of our operations
  • Adhere to WHS policies to create a safe work environment for yourself and your team
  • Be willing to work in a wide variety of conditions, including cold winters, warm summers, and humid indoor environments
  • Be willing to get your hands dirty working with operational waste streams
  • Have a respect for nature and the animals in our care
  • Have your own transport and a valid driver's license
  • Have a tertiary qualification in aquaculture or environmental sustainability related areas, preferably at Masters level or higher.
