We are looking for a Sustainability Specialist to join us at Royal Flying Doctor Service (Western Operations). This is a new role that will be responsible for developing the organisation’s Sustainability Framework. This framework outlines opportunities to enhance environmental performance and align with strategic priorities. The role involves leading the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of sustainability initiatives, considering strategic and operational impacts while advising key stakeholders and managing reporting requirements.
About you
- Degree in sustainability and environment, or a related field.
- Experience in the establishment, implementation and monitoring of environmental sustainability programs.
- Strong understanding of sustainability policies, best practices, and relevant regulations
- Demonstrated experience in program and project management.
- Leadership experience.
- Experience with budget preparation and management of expenditure.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare complex reports and documents, including those of a procurement or contractual nature.
About the role
- Lead and manage the implementation of the Sustainability Framework and associated sustainability programs and initiatives.
- Provide expert advice, direction and guidance to stakeholders on sustainability programs with specific reference to contractual, commercial and legal implications.
- Initiate and facilitate forums to address sustainability issues.
- Provide advice, guidance and direction on sustainability matters.
- Develop, implement and maintain systems, monitoring and reporting
- Audit existing sustainability practices, analyse performance against benchmarks.
- Prepare policy and procedures for sustainability matters for approval.
- Developing budgets.

The mission of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Western Operations) is to provide excellence in aeromedical and primary health care across Western Australia. Every member of the RFDS WO team contributes to that mission and living our values of showing respect, demonstrating fairness, utilising diversity and being safe. Every year, the RFDS WO provides urgent retrieval for about 10,000 patients in regional WA. A further 10,000 appointments are provided in primary healthcare clinics in remote communities, including GP, nurse, dental and mental health care. The RFDS in WA operates five bases in Perth, Broome, Port Hedland, Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra. Our 24/7 operations centre at Jandakot Airport coordinates complex logistics for patient retrievals and clinics across the State. We work in partnership with government, business and the community, and are proud to work on Country with Aboriginal medical services and many local service providers.
In 2024, the RFDS is launching a new five-year strategy ‘Above and Beyond’, which will mark an important new chapter in the long Flying Doctor history. The strategy will include a focus on expanding remote health clinics in some of WA’s most vulnerable communities, expanding our profit-for-purpose services, strengthening our workforce, harnessing technology and addressing our environmental sustainability.
