Employment opportunityThe Attorney-General's Department is seeking candidates to fill current and future vacancies across various positions at the APS Level 5 classification. The department achieves this by conducting a Talent Pipeline process. This process will be used to create a merit pool to fill vacancies at this level across the department for the duration of the merit pool.This is an exciting opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced candidates who can deliver influential and positive policy contributions to the Governments legal agenda for the good of the Australian people.The department performs a vast range of functions, and we are looking for high-performing candidates in the following areas:
  • Justice and Communities Group is responsible for key aspects of Australia's justice system, including the federal courts, tribunals and the family law system.
  • Integrity and International Group has legislative and policy responsibility for administrative law, information law, anti-corruption and fraud, human rights, modern slavery and human trafficking.
  • National Security and Criminal Justice Group is responsible for a range of national security and criminal justice laws and policies, including transnational serious and organised crime, cybercrime, cross-border data access, anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism, counter-espionage and foreign interference, electronic surveillance and law enforcement and criminal intelligence powers.
  • Enabling Services Group supports the departments corporate and organisational operations, including strategy and governance, human resources, corporate services, and information and communications technology.

For these positions, applicants must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Secretary, is appropriate to the duties of the office, or admission in Australia as a legal practitioner.The Affirmative Measures (Indigenous) process is open only to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who meet the criteria below. The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under Section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.To be eligible to apply for this role, you must:
  • be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and/or identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • be accepted by community as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage will only be required from candidates who are found suitable at the end of the process. The department will consider allowances in some circumstances, however evidence of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status is likely to include the following:
  • a letter signed by the Chairperson of an incorporated Indigenous organisation confirming that the applicant is recognised as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
  • a confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent document executed by an Indigenous organisation.
Note: The need to provide confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage is not required as part of the application process. Confirmation will be requested prior to the on boarding process.
