Exciting opportunity to teach as a part of our exceptional Mathematics Department in Western Australia’s beautiful Pilbara region.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

About the role

Teachers in Hedland Senior High School’s Mathematics team are focused creating outstanding outcomes for students and empowering every student who enters our classrooms.

Our teachers foster critical thinking, through using a range of teaching and learning strategies, that engage all students and meet their individual needs. At Hedland, our teachers design lessons that are relevant and meaningful; by utilising real work examples and applications, use maths games and activities that are fun, with problems that are satisfying to solve. Where possible we provide ‘on country’ and ‘in industry’ learning experiences.

In this role, the applicant should display knowledge of the Mathematics Western Australian Curriculum and the capacity to teach and or the desire to teach at both senior school, as well as quality numeracy instruction to empower students from diverse and challenging backgrounds. Primary School specialists in numeracy are strongly encouraged to apply.

The ideal teacher

The successful applicant will work as part of a team to enable all students to learn and study at school in a cooperative and positive environment. You will ideally be highly organised and have excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

You should model strong teaching and learning strategies in your delivery. Suitable applicants will ideally possess a repertoire of teaching strategies to engage students, ideally having knowledge of and experience in, a range of instructional strategies and tactics.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment will be well regarded, as well as a willingness to engage in professional learning and liaise with colleagues, parents and external networks to establish strong community partnerships.

As a skilled and experienced teacher, you should have a commitment to excellence in teaching and engage in regular self-reflection. In the first instance, only applicants with teaching qualifications will be considered. Where there are no suitable applicants with teaching qualifications, applicants without teaching qualifications may be considered. In this circumstance, a fixed term appointment as an untrained teacher for the 2022 school year will be offered.

We will consider an internal secondment opportunity for permanent teachers in other locations within the Department of Education who would like to work at our school for up to three years and retain their substantive position. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
