James Cook Boys Technology High School is a comprehensive secondary school with three inclusive education classes. Located in the southern Sydney suburb of Kogarah.
The student enrolment of 480 has been steadily increasing over the last five years. Our school community is culturally and linguistically diverse. While 73% of students have a non-English speaking background, 60% require some level of EAL/D (English as an additional language or dialect) support. Less than 3% of all students are Aboriginal.
As a Technology High School, the school is committed to ensuring all students have access to and develop the necessary skills to equip them to be successful learners and contributors in a rapidly changing world. Students have the opportunity to participate and be challenged in a wide range of learning experiences that occur through curriculum choices and co-curricular activities. The school has a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through inquiry-based learning that develops student's innovative and collaborative learning skills.
The school has a strong focus on improving student literacy outcomes through a sustained program of teacher professional learning. Additionally, a whole school approach to the teaching of numeracy is being implemented.
There is an aspirational emphasis on promoting and supporting students in leadership roles to positively contribute to the school and the future of the broader community. Positive Behaviour for Learning underpins student wellbeing with our expectations of safe, respectful, responsible and active learning.
The school has developed and maintains successful community and learning partnerships with local organisations and schools such as those in Bayside Learning Community (BLC) and Kogarah Cluster of Schools. The BLC consists of two secondary and six primary schools that strategically work together to improve teacher practice and supports the academic and wellbeing needs of students transitioning from primary to secondary school. The Kogarah Cluster of Schools consists of six secondary schools working collaboratively to develop and assess faculty teaching and learning programs.
