This is a thirty-six (36) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024

Kalumburu Remote Community School (KRCS) is seeking a enthusiastic Secondary Generalist Teacher to join their team.

If agreed upon with the school a shorter tenure with possible extension may be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Kalumburu Remote Community School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $5,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure).  Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year.  Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school. 

About the role

This role will suit someone who is highly motivated, relationship-focused, and passionate about creating exciting learning experiences to ignite a desire to learn in students.Kalumburu Remote Community School has two Secondary classes, These comprise of the Middle School (Years 7-9) and the High School (Years 10-12). The school is currently looking to appoint an enthusiastic, caring and compassionate teacher for the Middle School class. The classroom teacher is primarily responsible for the delivery of Literacy and Numeracy to the class. In addition to this the successful applicant will be a key player in the school’s Bushrangers Program. Students in the Secondary school complete activities within the class and On country once a week as part of the Bushrangers Program. Secondary students in the Middle School class are also provided with opportunities to attend TAFE and SIDE taster days in Kalumburu and Kununurra as part of the Secondary program. Students in the Secondary school are also able to attend camps and excursions such as Kimberley Cup (a week long Sports Carnival in Broome), Honeymoon Bay Bike Ride, Mitchell Falls Bike Camp, Astronomy Camp as well as Bushrangers camps and excursions. The classroom teacher will have the opportunity to be a part of these initiatives.

The successful applicant will be committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal students. You will ideally be flexible and innovative, and desire to be actively involved both within the school and wider community. Conscientious and highly reflective of your teaching practices, you will be willing to collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external networks to establish strong community partnerships.

A willingness to learn and embed the school’s Targeted Teaching approach and whole-school programs is essential. Programs include Explicit teaching practices, Daily Reviews, Spelling Mastery, Zones of Regulation and Protective Behaviours. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in  Two-way Science and On-Country learning.

Strong behaviour support capabilities, grounded in genuine, positive relationships, are vital in this context. The successful applicant will adopt the whole school Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approach to behaviour management and embed trauma-informed approaches and cultural awareness in the classroom and whole-school environment.  Positive interpersonal skills and a commitment to maintaining our positive staff culture are essential, and personal resilience will support your success in living and working in a very remote location.

In the first instance, only applicants with teaching qualifications will be considered. Where there are no suitable applicants with teaching qualifications, applicants without teaching qualifications may be considered.

Our School

From 2019, our school has been part of the Kimberley Schools Project (KSP), a federally funded initiative established to strengthen teaching pedagogy and improve outcomes for Kimberley students. The four pillars of the project are targeted teaching, better early years learning and care, regular attendance, and increased student and community engagement. Kalumburu RCS receives support in the form of professional learning, coaching, and funding through its participation in the project.

Our staff at Kalumburu RCS are a positive, supportive team and we have strong external supports from KSP and SSEN:BE coaches. Community participation and involvement in the school is actively encouraged. A local language (Wunambal) is taught to all students through a weekly Language class, and each term a Stronger Smarter day celebrates Culture and achievement.

Kalumburu’s Location

Kalumburu, meaning 'Path by the River’ or ‘River Crossing', is the most northerly Aboriginal Community in Western Australia and is situated on Kwini Country on the banks of the King Edward River. The nearest townships to Kalumburu are Kununurra (565 km Southeast), Wyndham (560 km Southeast) and Derby (650 km West). Road access to the region is dependent on seasonal conditions and Kalumburu is often inaccessible by road for four to six months of the year. Alternative access is by air from Kununurra, and supplies are regularly delivered by sea.

Services in Kalumburu

The Community of Kalumburu currently numbers around 500 people and is serviced by the school, community clinic, community store and an administration office providing postal, banking and Centrelink services.

Kalumburu provides many opportunities for outdoor recreational activities including fishing, camping and 4-wheel driving.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
