Aboriginal people were relocated from large surrounding areas to the mission over several decades.
The Aurukun Shire, with its own Shire Council, was established in 1978. It includes much of the traditional country of the Wik, Wik Way and Kugu people. The 7500 square kilometre shire has rare and beautiful environmental values.

Living in AurukunAurukun is a very remote Indigenous community located 11 hours by road from Cairns, on the North West coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Home to around 1300 people, this community is the traditional homeland of the Wik, Wik Waya and Kugu people. The predominant traditional language spoken in Aurukun is Wik Mungkan; this is the first language of most Aurukun children. A region rich in traditional cultural practices.When you have some down time, get out and explore the local area, go fishing or camping or take the 4WD out for a run – ask the locals for some tips. Travel to Aurukun is by road or air with Skytrans operating flights on weekdays.
