About the role

The Diesel Transition Program is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to reduce diesel-based carbon emissions across Rio Tinto's global portfolio. The work of this team includes the acceleration of technical solutions that will deliver Rio Tinto's ambitious emission reduction goals. Rio Tinto has an ambitious strategy to grow our business and decarbonise. From sourcing mining solutions of the future, to creating businesses with host communities, to building new supply chains around our greenfield assets, the importance of Procurement in Rio Tinto's success has never been greater.

We are looking for Technical Lead to join our Global Equipment and Diesel Transition team in Perth. You'll be part of a high performing team and responsible for shaping and enabling technical delivery of Diesel Transition Programs into our global operations.

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Diesel Transition Program, you will:

  • Embrace a growth mindset and use collaborative ways of working in multidisciplinary teams, to drive inclusivity, excellence, and build meaningful partnerships as we shape and deliver the Diesel Transition Program
  • Provide technical guidance on diesel abatement technology applications
  • Lead technical shaping of Diesel Transition Programs and support delivery into the Operations
  • Provide the core technical credibility for Diesel Transition Program to progress portfolio initiatives through the relevant research and development or study stage gates
  • Be a key interface between Diesel Transition Program and Group Technical teams, when specific deeper technical experience and / or research and development is required
  • Support Diesel Transition Program Portfolio Manager and Strategy & Commercial Manager with critical analysis, decision making, and prioritisation of new technologies
  • Support business case development and technical justification for chosen technologies within the Diesel Transition Program portfolio
  • Work with external providers (third parties, OEM's, engineering consultants) and provide critical analysis of new technologies and guidance to Diesel Transition Program on suitable applications within the business
  • Collaborate with broader business (Group Technical, OCS, Asset Management) for required deeper specific knowledge and technical expertise to ensure alignment with direction of the business
  • Remain engaged with electrification and equipment SME's within the business to leverage learnings from other areas.
  • Actively challenge beliefs on current diesel abatement technologies and stay abreast with leading research and industry learnings
  • Foster a culture of zero harm and continuous improvement

What you'll bring

  • Familiarity with various mine operating environments and new technology implementation
  • Experience with defining development approaches and subsequent implementation of new technologies in a mining environment, including operational readiness and challenges
  • Understanding of electrification including safety considerations (functional safety), high level design and output requirements
  • Comfort with systems thinking and understanding of how high-level approach can impact implementation of technology
  • Either systems engineering experience or understanding of relevant processes to support project implementation
  • Ability to address technical questions from OEMs and other suppliers on performance requirements of equipment, and be able to interpret and prioritize technical queries
  • Ability to lead technical resources on deployment of diesel displacement projects in Rio Tinto Operations
  • Experience with research and development framework and progressing ideas into successful deployment outcomes.
  • Familiarity with the due diligence and governance required to support future decision making if decisions are made to stop a particular solution
  • Able to work collaboratively across disciplines, bring a project delivery focus and mindset, and constructively and respectfully challenge
