Dohertys Creek P-9 College is seeking a dedicated Education Support and Tradesperson to work as part of a school team and school community to build on our learning culture at our wonderful school in Truganina.

Dohertys Creek P-9 College opened in 2019 and caters for children in Prep ¿ Year 8. In 2024 the school will expand to include Year 9 students. We are working to create an innovative and robust secondary program that enhances our primary program and is developing exciting vocational pathways and opportunities for students to be active in our community as they further grow and develop.

The school is situated at 60 Elmhurst Road, Truganina.

Our facilities include a beautiful Administration/Library building with purpose-built classrooms, a gymnasium (including performing arts & student kitchen), two Learning Communities, multi-courts and additional landscaping and play areas.

Our school is based on a relationship model and is inclusive. Our school goal is to differentiate learning to meet every student¿s needs and have all students achieve excellence.

We aim to be a community school which is safe and secure and meets the needs of each individual young person. Role

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION

The Trade engagement program / Classroom Support person plays an important role within the College by working closely with students participating in the Trade engagement program. It is expected that they will provide a high level of customer service to the student body, staff, parents and visitors to the College and be competent in the provision of up to date and relevant information. Classroom Support for students is within the Middle Years program and duties are varied.

The role of the Trade engagement program / Classroom Support person is to provide technical support to the Engagement Leading Teacher as well as assist in the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of the students, ensuring that the program is conducted in a safe environment that is OHS & DET compliant.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND IMPACT

The Trade engagement program / Classroom Support person fulfils an important public relations and customer service function by assisting selected students to participate in the Trade engagement program. The program delivers engagement programs within small groups for Year 5 ¿ 9 students, with the Trade engagement program / Classroom Support person expected to work as part of a team with teachers and volunteer workers to deliver the program. It is important that the Trade engagement program / Classroom Support personoperates in a consistent, professional, courteous and efficient manner at all times whilst also modelling the values of Dohertys Creek P-9 College (Kindness, Respect, learning, integrity and teamwork).

The Trade engagement program / Classroom Support person is required to work cooperatively with both internal and external clients and involves close interaction with the Engagement Leading Teacher, teachers, families, other schools, leadership team and the Principal. Consistency is vital in all aspects of this role as the dissemination of consistent, accurate information is essential.

This position requires the incumbent to have experience working in a trade environment (a trade qualification would be advantageous) and be prepared to obtain a bus licence should the College deem it necessary.

Responsibilities

Trades engagement program support:

·       Set up/clearing away of equipment and materials as needed for the smooth running of the Trades engagement program

·       Provide specialist advice, under supervision of senior personnel, to students in relation to the handling and use of materials and equipment.

·       Assist the program coordinator with the maintenance of accurate records and data on students participating in the program.

·       Advise teachers about technical components of curriculum implementation for the Trades engagement program

providing basic instruction on the safe use of equipment and materials where required, e.g. handling of hand tools.

·       Maintain storage areas of equipment, ensuring as far as practicable that these areas are kept secure from unauthorized access.

·       Consult with the Engagement Leading Teacher on their needs for practical work, maintaining an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment, setting a priority where necessary.

·       Assist with the ordering and maintenance of adequate supplies of materials / equipment required for the efficient delivery of the Trades engagement program

·       Advise on equipment safety matters when appropriate.

·       Check that equipment (e.g. hand tools) is maintained in working order, and organize repair where appropriate.

·       Collaborate with the Engagement Leading Teacher to produce budget proposals where required.

·       Develop and implement safety procedures within work and/or teaching areas, ensuring all practical work is conducted within OH&S and DET guidelines and in accordance with school policy.

Classroom support:

·       Assist with bus driving duties for school excursions when required.

·       Work with small groups (suggested maximum size is 8)

·       Help to promote positive self-esteem and worth.

·       Assist with activities, excursions and interaction in the school yard

·       Assist with the preparation of classroom materials and resources with teacher direction (including specialist classes).

·       Assist with the personal hygiene of integrated students according to their particular requirements.

·       Attend Student Support Group Meetings (S.S.G).

·       Act as a resource person for Support Services provided by the Department of Education and Training and `outside¿ support agencies.

·       Assist in the development and evaluation of Long and Short Term Goals for student Individual Learning Plans. (ILP¿S).

·       Assist in the development and evaluation of modified work programs of integrated students.

·       Provide a point of contact between the school and the parents of integrated students under the guidance of the Assistant Principal of the students¿ Sub-School.

·       Undertake additional duties as requested by the Principal Team.

·       Assist in the set up process for organising files, keeping records, discussions and feedback from teachers relating to specified students.

·       Attend team meetings.

·       Assist in developing an online profile for specified students and ensuring relevant and up to date information is included.

·       Participate in lunchtime supervision and activities including Yard Duty when required.

General Expectations

·         Peruse the DET mail for updated material/advice regarding policy, procedure and guidelines changes

·         Comply with the College¿s policies and procedures

·         Commit to upholding DET¿s Values of Responsiveness, Integrity, Impartiality, Accountability, Respect, Leadership and Human Rights in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Victorian Public Sector Employees and Public Administration Act 2004

·         Maintain a healthy and safe working environment in accordance with DET OH&S requirements.

·         Promote the safety and wellbeing of all students and demonstrate commitment to protecting students from abuse or harm at Dohertys Creek P-9 College, in accordance with legal obligations including child safe standards.

·         Liaise with the Principal to undertake relevant staff professional development and training.

·         Undertake other duties relevant to the field of responsibility as requested by the Business Manager or Principal
