The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatient surgical services to the ACT and surrounding region. The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit and Extended Day Surgery Unit, specialist surgical ward areas, medical and nursing outpatient services, ACT Trauma Service, Intensive Care Unit, Capital Region Retrieval Service and the Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit. These Units are supported by administration support officers.

The General Surgery Unit at CHS provides tertiary level surgical care to the ACT and surrounding region. This General Surgeon position will primarily be responsible for the provision of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as part of the General Surgery team. They will also require demonstrated expertise in major oesophagogastric surgery.

The successful applicant is required to demonstrate training, experience, and competence working in Upper Gastrointestinal surgery and have recognition or be registered for training for ERCP by the Conjoint Committee (for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy- Australia). It is an opportunity for a General Surgeon to work in a multidisciplinary team focused on providing high quality best practice care to patients and to engage in teaching, training, and clinical research.

The position has an option to work as a permanent Staff Specialist or a Visiting Medical Officer.

Duties:

  1. Provide specialist general surgery services to inpatients and outpatients working collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to provide high quality and safe person-centred care.
  2. Coordinate and contribute to the daytime and on call/after-hours roster, in conjunction with other specialists, at a frequency required to cover the roster throughout the year. This includes the daytime and on call/after-hours roster of the Acute Surgical Unit. You will need to contribute to the ACT Trauma Service when required and rostered.
  3. Coordinate and contribute to multidisciplinary education and training and actively participate in the training of junior medical staff including interns, resident medical officers, and registrars within the Division.
  4. Actively engage in clinical governance to ensure services are high quality and safe, adhere to the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and participate in relevant committees and meetings including regular audit meetings.
  5. Contribute to research activity and support junior medical staff in research activities.
  6. Strive for continuous professional development and undertake research relevant to the science and/or clinical practice of the specialty.
  7. Utilise digital health and health information systems to enable the provision of safe and timely access to services.
  8. Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high quality person and family centred, safe and high quality patient care

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – CHS is constructing a new critical services building called ‘Building 5’ which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. Building 5 is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken in the Territory’s history and it represents the largest clinical and operational change program to ever be implemented by Canberra Health Services. Building 5 integrates with a number of existing buildings at the Campus including Building 1 and Building 2, to facilitate a seamless public thoroughfare, patient transportation and back-of-house logistics distribution.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
