Job description

Our RSPCA NSW Broken Hill Veterinary Hospital is looking for a Veterinarian to join our hospital team. Reporting to the Managing Veterinarian, you will be responsible for ensuring that a high standard of animal care and customer service is provided to our wonderful clients.

The clinic will operate as a three Veterinarian practice which also benefits from the support of visiting Veterinarians from the two other RSPCA NSW Veterinary hospitals. The practice is well equipped and is in the process of completing a renovation so that this purpose built practice will benefit from additional space and facilities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Veterinarian to experience the Aussie outback in the beautiful heritage listed town of Broken Hill, NSW.

About RSPCA NSW
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals New South Wales (RSPCA NSW) is a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation. We provide a strong voice for animals experiencing cruelty and neglect. RSPCA NSW is committed to the care and welfare of animals, providing extensive professional facilities, including fully equipped veterinary hospitals and our state-wide shelter network, with approximately 500 staff across NSW to care for animals.

Culture & Benefits

  • Salary $120-150k per year plus superannuation, for a Veterinarian with experience. New graduates will also be considered
  • Accommodation provided in a three bedroom house
  • Generous allowance to support continuous professional development in addition to one week of paid study leave
  • Annual VIN, AVA and ASAVA Membership
  • Use of a work vehicle
  • One complimentary domestic return flight annually to Sydney or Adelaide
  • A broad range of leave entitlements including 12 weeks paid parental leave
  • Access to a range of mental health and wellbeing support initiatives, including confidential counselling services and education programs
  • Generous discount on products and services, including pet food, retail and vet clinic products and services
  • Access to a range of learning and development opportunities that will benefit and support you in your role
  • Supportive and experienced team of vets and nurses
  • Large and varied caseload of predominantly small animal private practice
  • A large peer network across the RSPCA network and partner veterinary practice for further development and case discussion with opportunities to further develop your surgical skills

About the Role
  • This is a full-time position, but applicants who are looking for a part-time position will also be considered
  • There is flexibility to cater for the applicant’s particular interest. For example, Vets with an interest in an increased surgical case load could be accommodated
  • Conducting veterinary consultations for private small animal patients
  • The Broken Hill Veterinary Hospital is not associated with an RSPCA shelter. However, there is opportunity to assist with outreach activities including desexing and vaccination programs in remote and disadvantaged communities
  • Opportunities to assist the RSPCA inspectorate with animal cruelty investigations
  • Routine and emergency medical diagnostic and therapeutic management
  • Undertaking surgical procedures from routine to more advanced, depending on the confidence and interest of the applicant
  • Veterinary dentistry
  • Support for wildlife rescue organisations
  • Provide advice and guidance on a wide range of animal welfare matters to members of the public

Feedback from a locum veterinarian:
“Working with the team at the RSPCA Broken Hill was an absolute pleasure! I worked here as a locum vet and was instantly made to feel like a part of the team. The vets, nurses and support staff are a compassionate bunch of people who take a great deal of care with their patients. Being so remote, you see some really interesting cases and the clientele are generally extremely grateful for having such a high standard of care available to them. I would highly recommend this clinic to any vets keen for an outback adventure.”

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications as a Veterinarian, recognised by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council
  • Registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW
  • Previous experience as a Veterinarian
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have a strong passion for upholding good animal welfare
  • Demonstrated affinity for adventure and a hunger for experiencing being part of a community!
