About the role

The Family, Carer & Respite program provides a range of supports and services to families and carers who are caring for someone with mental health issues. The program offers counselling, mentoring and coaching, peer support, group workshops, case management, support coordination, linkages with service providers, online forums, carer education and information, education and vocational support, recovery retreats, respite programs and recreational activities. Family, Carer & Respite operate in the context of local community with a focus on supporting people to build confidence, develop resilience and achieve their better life goals.

We are seeking compassionate, self-motivated Volunteer - Carer Helpline for a 12 month commitment (1-2 shifts per fortnight) to support people experiencing mental ill health in the Heidelberg area. You will provide empathetic telephone and online support, non-clinical information, mentoring and referral services to carers and families contacting the Carer Helpline. Volunteers will empower carers, family members or clients with pathways to mental health services, community supports, service providers and wellbeing strategies.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support, social companionship and support them on their recovery journey to live their best life.
  • Encourage individuals to participate in recreational activities, interest groups, social events or clubs.
  • Participate with individual in activities of interest, e.g. coffee catch ups, visiting galleries or libraries, sporting events, walks, exercising or watching movies.
  • Provide a welcoming environment and empower clients to build community connections and social confidence.

What you’ll bring

  • No minimum qualification is required but Tertiary qualifications in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health-related field is desirable.
  • Previous experience in a similar volunteering or customer service position is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills with a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Willingness to understand mental ill health and its effects on families and carers.
  • An understanding of the NDIS, Mental Health, Community Services and Disability sectors is desirable.
