Job description

The Harding Miller Education Foundation (HMEF) is an Australian charity providing academic scholarships to high-potential girls in Australian government high schools who are experiencing hardship or disadvantage. Established in 2016, we currently support 695 students in 320 schools across Australia and we are growing.

About the Role

The Volunteer Coach and Tutoring Coordinator will be responsible for leading and growing a dedicated team of volunteer coaches to support our scholarship recipients – recruiting, training, supervising, and providing ongoing support and recognition to ensure they can thrive in their volunteer roles.  You will also work closely with our scholars and their coaches to ensure our scholarship recipients are making full use of their scholarship tools – with a particular focus on managing the tutoring component of the scholarship toolkit.

** Although this is a full-time position, we are very open to offering the role on a job-share basis to two part-time employees.  The role also has the flexibility to suit a hybrid working arrangement – working both from home and in our Balmain office.  On occasion, there will be some work required outside of normal business hours to accommodate volunteer training and events **

We are looking for a highly organised, hands-on team player with exceptional communication and relationship-building skills who relates well with teenagers.  You will be committed to creating a positive and supportive environment for volunteers while understanding and considering the needs of the scholarship recipients engaged in our program.

This is a full-time position based in Balmain although we are very open to offering this role on a job-share basis to two suitable candidates who want to work part-time hours.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the recruitment strategies and activities required to meet the needs of the Foundation.
  • Develop and conduct coach orientation and induction training.
  • Ensure each scholar is matched and introduced to a knowledgeable and motivated coach.
  • Ensure all volunteer coaches have the tools, knowledge, and skills to carry out their duties.
  • Be a coach to the coaches – answering queries and offering guidance on how to engage with scholars effectively.
  • Coach several scholars over different school year groups while they are on the program.
  • Design and implement retention and recognition strategies for volunteer coaches.
  • Create and distribute regular coach newsletters and other communications.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records on all coaches – including WWC records.
  • Manage and coordinate coach events (online and in person) including coach involvement at our annual awards events.
  • Manage the tutoring component of the scholarship program by proactively monitoring tutoring budgets and assisting coaches and scholars with sourcing suitable tutoring providers.
  • Contribute accurate data and insights to our quarterly board reports and annual reports concerning coach engagement and turnover trends.
  • Manage and monitor the scholar feedback surveys for our year 12 scholars.
  • Collect and report on the ATAR results of our year 12 scholars.
  • Provide support with other scholar-related projects and communications as required.

To perform this role, you will ideally have proven experience:

  • Working effectively with both adults and teenagers
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders
  • Managing volunteers and having an understanding of the importance of volunteers to an organisation.

The successful applicant will be required to apply for and receive a Working With Children's Check and a National Police Check.  A driver's licence is strongly preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience working in the Australian education system.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Experience in recruitment of staff and/or volunteers.
