The McGovern Foundation has identified the need for a specifically targeted Driver Mentor program that eliminates all barriers for disadvantaged people to obtain and maintain their driver’s licence.
The Wanderer Driver Mentor Program will provide mentoring, practical support, and the necessary resources to those who otherwise would be unable to complete 50 hours of supervised driving.
- The Driver Mentor relationship is central to our program; two people in a safe environment, sharing stories, challenges, culture, life goals, and 50 hours on the road.
- The McGovern Foundation aims to create a stream of mentored, mobile, and employable people to strengthen the workforce and community.
About the Role
We are seeking applicants with strong interpersonal and communication skills with a passion for making a difference through holistic mentoring, helping people navigate their driving and life journey. To be successful, you will need a solution-focused attitude, excellent time management skills, and a motivated self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and as part of an extended team.
- Complete extensive driver training prior to commencing with participants.
- Refresher Mentoring course.
- Pick-up Learner Drivers support them to work towards achieving logbook hours and passing their practical driving assessment.
- Must complete 28 - 30 hours of driving lessons per week.
- Build strong relationships with young people, and support their emotional well-being and connection with the community.
- Provide age-appropriate advice and guidance to young people regarding health and well-being, education, life skills, and work readiness.

Selection Criteria
To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following essential criteria
- Experience in Youth Work, Mentoring, or Community Service.
- Strong knowledge, understanding, and engagement experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, and other vulnerable community members.
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
- Preparedness to work after-hours as required.

Essential position requirement
- Must have held a C-Class licence for a minimum of 4 years
- Manual Driver’s Licence
- Working with Children Check
- Current National Police Clearance
