Muir is a Tasmanian based maritime manufacturing and engineering business which produces world-renowned high-quality anchoring systems for marine vessels across the full range of sizes.
We are looking for an experienced Welder and Fabricator to join our highly specialised manufacturing team in the crafting of superyacht and commercial anchoring systems. We have fitted some of the world's most famous superyachts with Tasmanian anchoring systems and we are proud of our Australian manufacturing heritage.
The role is primarily focussed on the fabrication of highly customised parts for our superyacht and commercial projects, with the some assitance in fitting and finishing (polishing) roles. Broad experience in metal fabrication, including some basic machining experience, is highly valued.
Previous experience with class society (i.e. DNV, Lloyds or BV) welding qualifications is highly regarded. Welding qualification for defence projects will be required.
There is opportunity for domestic and international travel to assist with rectification and service works.
Main Duties are:
- Promote a safe working environment within the factory and across the wider business.
- Prepare, weld and clean up predominantly 316 stainless steel components of anchoring equipment. Aluminium, bronze and mild steel welding is also often required.
- Craft structures by dismantling, reshaping, welding and reassembling metal components using engineering drawings, mostly in 316 stainless steel, but also aluminium, bronze and mild steel.
- Propose innovative ideas for continuous improvement of the business utilising the change request process.
- Provide constructive feedback on designs, identify and reduce errors and improve constructability through the change request and non-conformity processes.
- Operate manual and semi-automatic welding equipment.
- Monitor and maintain work equipment.
- Design patterns, templates, and models to improve assembly processes.
- Assist with estimating materials and labour time required to craft high quality components.
- Perform on the job quality checks on completed products.
- Assist with other workshop tasks as required (e.g. polishing, winch assembly etc.)

Requirements the successful applicant will need to fill the position are:
- Relevant trade qualification (i.e. Welder/Boilermaker).
- Must be able to work within a team environment.
- A desire to work flexibly to ensure safety, environment and production targets are met.
- High-level communication skills, with a proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Sound knowledge in the manufacturing industry (or similar).
- Knowledge or understanding of continuous improvement is desirable, but not essential.
- Self-Motivated with a “can do” attitude.
- Willingness to assist in other areas around the work shop as workflow requires.
