Welder / Leading Hand

Pump & Valve Engineering specialise in the repair of industrial pumps and valves for the mining and Alumina refining industries. 

An opportunity is available for an experienced welder to join our team. Our current Leading Hand welder wishes to transition to retirement. As such we are looking for a suitable candidate to train and take over the position.

A large percentage of Pump & Valve Engineering’s business is dictated by the need to regularly produce fully repaired industrial valves for our customers to meet their regular outage requirements. The weld repair of these valves is a significant component of the repair work involved.

Another large percentage of Pump & Valve Engineering’s business is repairing industrial pump casings. Again, the weld repair of these pump casings is a significant component of the repair work.

The successful candidate would be trained with the aim of running the welding side of things especially for the valves.

Our current Leading Hand welder’s duties include the following:

• Flux Core overlay welding of the valves using semi-automatic welding machines.
• Assessing and marking up of the valves we repair.
• NDT testing using Dye Penetrant and Magnetic Particle.
• Overhead crane work.
• Liaise with management regarding stock levels of all welding consumables, including welding wire, welding electrodes, welding gases, welding machine spares, grinding discs and any other incidentals.
• Liaising and co-ordinating with management, other welders, machinists and fitters to ensure work is on track to meet the valve outage requirements.
• Other welding tasks including manual welding (FCAW, MMAW, GMAW), arc-air gouging, grinding, etc.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

• Qualifications and experience in welding and/or boilermaking.
• Able to interpret drawings.
• Good communications skills.
• The ability to work well with others.
• Good time management skills.
• Positive attitude.
• Desire to learn.

Pump & Valve Engineering have a low turn-over of staff. We have quite a number of employees eligible for long service leave. So we like to think that the low staff turn-over is an indication that the working conditions are pretty good. The person you would be replacing wants to transition to retirement after working here for many years. They would be involved with your training.

The work is very regular and very reliable. This means you would have regular work with regular hours. We would prefer a candidate looking for full-time employment. However, we would consider accommodating part-time for the right candidate with the right skills and attributes. There is regular overtime available if that is what you are looking for.
