About the role

A Wellness Support Counsellor plays a vital role within the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience portfolio, Student Wellbeing pillar, Health theme in the provision of confidential mental health services to currently enrolled students at UNSW. They are responsible for the provision of psychological support for enrolled UNSW students with mental health concerns.

Working closely with other Psychology & Wellness staff, Mental Health Connect, well as the UNSW academic community, the role makes a critical contribution to the broad Psychology & Wellness Team in the treatment and support of UNSW student mental health needs. The overarching goal of this position is to support students in achieving their full potential, and contribute to an outstanding learning experience aligned with the portfolio’s Education & Student Experience strategy.

The role reports to the Team Lead Wellness Support and has no direct reports. Mandarin speakers are encouraged to apply.

About the successful candidate

(Selection Criteria)

  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications or substantial mental health experience and equivalent competence gained through a combination of education, training and clinical experience.
  • Full AHPRA registration as a Psychologist or AASW Mental Health Social Worker accreditation.
  • Substantial experience with a wide array of psychological disorders and their treatments or interventions.
  • Ability to provide clinically sound advice to other university stakeholders in regards to student mental health concerns.
  • Extensive experience with, and comfort working with students who are at risk, or have a serious mental health disorder.
  • Demonstrate high levels of empathy for, and understanding of, the psychosocial issues and concerns experienced and exhibited by students undertaking university level studies.
  • Eligible for and willingness to obtain a Medicare provider number for bulk billed services provided by Psychology & Wellness under the Medicare Better Access initiative and OSHC.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to contribute positively and proactively to the team’s work. Demonstrated self-motivation, initiative and judgement and the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Capacity to support students to navigate administrative processes in a complex environment, consult and influence stakeholders and advocate on behalf of students.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to empathise and provide specialised advice to culturally diverse students with a broad range of needs.
  • Proven experience developing and providing high quality mental health support programs or service delivery to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organisational skills including a demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to plan, organise and co-ordinate projects and tasks that enhance the positive wellbeing approach and mental health literacy through in class activities.
  • Comfortable and proficient operating digitally in particular using telehealth planforms to engage with students and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to provide expert guidance and advice on a range of issues impacting student mental health, welfare, participation, retention and success within the higher education sector.
