The Work Health and Safety Advisor position, reporting directly to the Executive Manager of People and Capability, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and compliant working environment within the organisation.

This key position involves collaborating with various Sections to develop, implement, and monitor health and safety programs, policies, and procedures.

The Advisor will conduct risk assessments, provide expert guidance on safety regulations, and contribute to the overall well-being of employees. With a focus on fostering a culture of safety, the role involves proactive measures to prevent accidents and promote a healthy workplace, aligning with organisational goals and legal standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards and recommend and implement preventive measures to mitigate risks.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to management and staff on health and safety matters, promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the organisation.
  • Stay abreast of relevant occupational health and safety regulations, updating policies accordingly to ensure compliance with legal standards.
  • Collaborate with various departments to deliver targeted health and safety training programs, fostering awareness and competence among employees.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and compile reports with recommendations for corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives, adjusting strategies as needed to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the implementation of emergency response plans, ensuring employees are adequately trained and prepared for a variety of situations.
  • Introduce health and wellbeing programs for all staff on key topics such as resilience, mental health, remote location challenges.
  • Ensure organisation meets compliance with Providing a Business or undertaking (PCBU) duty of care.
  • Mentor both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff at all levels of the organisation and positions to build their capability.
  • Implementation of WHS training, chemical registers, incident reporting actions, CHUBB induction requirements, WHS committee, Section induction specific requirements, safe work method statements and any other activity deemed relevant to the position.
  • Foster positive relationships with key stakeholders (external contacts, CQI facilitator, Executive Team etc) to promote a collaborative approach to health and safety management.
  • Essential skills and experience:

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a similar position and Certificate IV in Work, health and Safety or higher qualification.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of work health and safety principles, regulations, and best practices, with a proven track record in implementing effective safety programs.
  • Strong skills in conducting comprehensive risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Thorough understanding of Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, ensuring the organisation's policies and practices are in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to the cultural context of Aboriginal health, with the ability to tailor health and safety initiatives to meet the unique needs of Aboriginal communities and facilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including Aboriginal health facility personnel, to foster a positive safety culture.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programs related to health and safety, ensuring employees at all levels possess the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and oversee emergency response plans, ensuring preparedness for potential crises and effectively managing incidents when they occur.
  • Strong analytical abilities to assess complex health and safety issues, coupled with the capacity to develop practical and effective solutions.
  • Commitment to ongoing evaluation and improvement of health and safety initiatives, adapting strategies to enhance overall workplace safety.
  • Current Northern Territory Driver’s License.
  • Be in possession or can obtain an OCHRE Card (Working with Children check).
  • Appointment Conditions:

  • Employment is conditional on obtaining a National Police Clearance and Ochre Card (NT Working with Children) prior to commencement in this role.
  • All employees must be Fully Vaccinated against COVID-19
