Job description

Granite Belt Support Services Inc. (GBSS) is a not-for-profit, registered NDIS provider. GBSS was established in 1990 and currently employs 85+ people working to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities/special needs in the Southern Downs region. GBSS is a busy centre offering NDIS Respite and Day Care, Community Access, a wide range Therapy Services, Education Support and Plan Management. 

We are seeking a passionate person to join our team as the WHS & Training Coordinator to share our vision and determination to support people to ‘live their best lives’.

About the Role

The WHS (Work Health and Safety) and Training Coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and professional development of our staff members within the context of disability support services under the NDIS framework. This position involves developing, implementing, and overseeing occupational health and safety programs, as well as coordinating training initiatives to support the professional growth and competence of our workforce.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive WHS policies, procedures, and protocols in compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and NDIS requirements.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures.
  • Provide advice and support to management and staff on WHS matters, including incident management, injury prevention, and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate WHS training programs for staff members, ensuring they are adequately trained and informed about safety procedures, manual handling techniques, infection control measures, and other relevant topics.
  • Collaborate with departmental managers to address WHS concerns, resolve issues, and promote a culture of safety and accountability across the organisation.
  • Collaborate with Client Services Department to complete Environmental Accessibility Checklist and Risk Management Plans for clients.
  • Ensure hazards and unsafe workplace conditions/practices have been identified, reported, and are actioned. Monitor corrective actions to ensure risks are eliminated, isolated or reduced. 
  • Assist in the investigation process of incidents, near misses and unsafe work practices including the reporting of these with appropriate control measures to the WHS Sub Committee
  • Ensure the organisation has processes in place for adequate fire protection, checks of equipment and evacuation drills.
  • Ensure first aid responders are appointed, that first aid kits and personal protective equipment comply with appropriate standards, are maintained and available as required.
  • Conduct monthly WHS Sub-Committee meetings and maintain WHS Annual Planner.
  • Maintain accurate WHS records, incident reports, and documentation, and prepare reports for GBSS Management Committee.
  • Facilitate successful return-to-work strategies for workers to reintegrate into the workplace following absence due to injury, illness or disability.
  • Stay abreast of changes in WHS legislation, regulations, and industry best practices, and ensure organisational compliance with all relevant requirements.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive training and professional development program for staff members, including induction, orientation sessions, ongoing training modules, and skill-building workshops.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training initiatives through feedback mechanisms, performance assessments, and other evaluation methods, and make recommendations for improvement as needed.
  • Collaborate with external training providers, and industry partners to expand training opportunities and resources for staff members.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Cert IV in Training and Assessment (Current).
  • Certification or accreditation in WHS management (e.g., Cert IV in WHS) -Desirable
  • Experience in delivering training programs will be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and managing WHS programs within a similar organisational context, preferably within the disability support sector or healthcare industry.
  • Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, regulations, and standards, particularly as they relate to the NDIS framework.
  • Proven ability to conduct risk assessments, investigate incidents, and develop practical solutions to mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to engage and motivate staff at all levels.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using computer software and technology for record-keeping, data analysis, and training delivery.
