  • Fixed term full-time up to 12 month contract
  • Salary from $107,824 p.a. + 11% superannuation

Our vision is to be a world leading zoo-based conservation organisation, working locally and globally to deliver tangible conservation outcomes.Zoos Victoria has an exciting opportunity for a Wildlife Welfare Programs Veterinarian to join team. This role is part of a partnership between Zoos Victoria and RSPCA Victoria formed to advance the field of Wildlife Welfare in Victoria by bringing together organisations with skills and expertise in Animal Welfare and Wildlife Conservation.The role is designed as a strategic role and does not have a substantial clinical component. Key activities include:
  • Support the development of ethical frameworks to guide decision making for wildlife impacted by emergency situations, both day to day and during disasters
  • Work with ZV and key stakeholders to enhance preparedness and develop response pathways for wildlife impacted by emerging and emergency animal diseases.
  • Contribute to ZV's wildlife health and welfare community outreach and training programs.
  • Support the development of and maintain evidence-based standards of animal welfare that can be implemented into clinical assessment and rehabilitation protocols and foster continuous improvement in wildlife rehabilitation protocols.
  • Maintain existing relationships and develop new networks with the wildlife and animal welfare community, wildlife health research, government and other organisations to improve communication and networks at a state and national level
The candidate must possess:
  • A veterinary degree registerable in Australia
  • Postgraduate qualifications in wildlife health or animal welfare, conservation medicine, ecology or a related discipline is also desirable
  • Experience in the veterinary assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of Australian native and/or exotic wildlife.
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategies to advance animal health and welfare
  • Expertise in, and/or an understanding of relevant contemporary research on, Wildlife Welfare, care or recovery and/or population management planning
  • Well-developed research design, conceptual and analytical skills pertaining to wildlife population health or disease and/or animal welfare science or veterinary science.
  • Expertise in the extension and communication of Wildlife Welfare science and research activities, particularly the ability to work at the interface between science and practice.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to communicate clinical and risk assessment concepts, maintain effective internal/external working relationships, and develop networks and partnerships.
