About Metro Trains Sydney (MTS)

MTS is now in its fifth year of operating Australia’s first fully automated passenger railway, the Sydney Metro North-West line, and will soon be extending this Metro line through to the City and Southwest. About the Role  

Reporting directly to the Head of People and Culture your role will be to lead and manage the development, implementation and review of Workforce Development and Industry Participation, Aboriginal participation as well as diversity and inclusion strategies, plans, programs and initiatives across MTS.

You will act as a champion for diversity as you support the administration and delivery of key programs as well as working closely with our partner educational institutions, customers and suppliers to promote a more inclusive work environment and Industry

The role is responsible for overall development, delivery and reporting of all MTS contractual requirements relating to Workforce Development and Industry Participation, Aboriginal participation as well as diversity and inclusion as set out in our Operations, Trains and Systems Deed.


Key Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the implementation of Workforce Development and Industry Participation strategies and plans to support delivery of organisational objectives and priorities.
  • Ensure MTS meets its commitments relating to Workforce Development, Industry and Aboriginal Participation.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance, ensuring a strategic and consistent approach to the delivery of skills, jobs and increased diversity within the MTS workforce and supply chain.
  • Review and manage subject matter content for contract documentation and policies relating to Workforce Development and Industry Participation.
  • Identify and engage key stakeholders within Sydney Metro, TfNSW, other Government agencies and Industry to inform the development of sustainable programs and initiatives.
  • Lead research and analysis of workforce data to inform Development and delivery of timely and sustainable programs that support delivery of targets.
  • Establish collaborative and productive relationships to manage and monitor contractor performance, delivery of workforce requirements and reporting to ensure regular and accurate projects-wide workforce data.
  • Identify and establish key contacts within local Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander and Torres Strait Islander communities including liaising with Local Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander land Councils and other government bodies.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander and Torres Strait Islander and other employees from diverse backgrounds.
  • Manage and promote recognition of and participation in Welcome to Country, Acknowledgement of Country, Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week activities.
  • Develop and implement other key diversity events identified in the annual Diversity and Inclusion calendar.
  • Champion, inspire, encourage and achieve a truly diverse and inclusive working culture.

About You 

As a superior communicator, you have exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to provide advice, influence and negotiate with diverse internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You are confident to engage across the organisation to progress and deliver actions outlined in our key plans, assisting organisational leaders with understanding best-practice approaches.

You will have a strong understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices, theories, and trends with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing comprehensive diversity and inclusion initiatives, programs, and policies aligned with organisational strategy, in particular with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Participation programs.

With the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, you display empathy, cultural sensitivity, and respect for diverse perspectives, with the ability to foster inclusive and collaborative environments.
