Where you'll be working
Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you'll be doing
Western Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Services (WSLHD-MHS) is committed to building a professional workforce that supports consumers with a severe and persistent mental illness in their recovery journey. The Mental Health Peer Workforce in WSLHD-MHS is comprised of workers who have the lived or living experience of mental ill health and recovery, as well as additional skills and work experiences. The Peer Workforce is seen as vital in the support and guidance they positively offer to consumers and the Mental Health service, through the significant gains made in their own recovery. This is achieved by being a positive role model and offering new hope and insights in the practical meaning of personal recovery.
 
Peer Workers will respect the Consumers experiences, supporting their self-determination, identifying and working toward collaborative goals and needs and promotion within the community. A primary goal is to work collaboratively and positively with consumers and staff to facilitate effective participation in individual treatment and recovery. The Peer Worker will require the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Selection Criteria: 

  1. Personal experience as a consumer of Mental Health Services and ability to utilise the lived experience to support others in their own Mental Health recovery journey.
  2. Certificate IV in Peer Work, or willingness to obtain this qualification.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to consumer led recovery principles including the physical health care of Mental Health consumers.
  4. Demonstrated clear written and verbal communication and negotiation skills including computer skills (MS Office).
  5. Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team and actively contribute to clinical care planning processes in a team setting.
  6. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders, GP’s, non-government organisations, inpatient & community Mental Health teams, consumers and carers.
  7. Current Drivers Licence valid within Australia (P2 acceptable)
