Job description

At Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation (‘AKKF’) our purpose is to empower young people to thrive beyond the impacts of family mental illness. We achieve this by:

  • Delivering positive mental health outcomes through high quality services that are trauma informed and evidence based;
  • Delivering services that uniquely integrate recreation with mental health education, on the kids turf and on the kids terms; and
  • Driving thought leadership and best practice in mental health through research and advocacy for young people and their families across Australia.

The opportunity:

Reporting to the Service Delivery Manager, The Young Carer Community Outreach Coordinator role is a full-time maximum term contract that is based in Cairns, North Queensland. The role is working two days in office and three days from home or community based.

The maximum term date of the contract is 30 June 2026. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for facilitation and delivery of allocated AKKF programs, including Camps, Activity Days, Connect as well as any other identified program/Service Delivery requirements. 
  • Ensure that programs delivered remain in alignment with AKKF’s clinical practices and organisational parameters, policies, procedures, and within budget
  • Proactively engage with the broad community and the mental health sector within Cairns and Townsville, to promote awareness and engagement with AKKF (i.e., with community groups, universities, referral agencies and any other identified stakeholders.). 
  • Within designated region develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with referral partners and other identified stakeholders. 
  • Identify and attend (as appropriate) community engagement events/activities to promote AKKF, maintaining an accurate activity/engagement calendar. 
  • Proactively identify and coordinate sources of young people within your region eligible to participate in AKKF programs, aligning sources of intake with program delivery locations. 
  • Engage young people to sign up to AKKF programs through the AKKF referral process.  
  • Coordinate young people and family engagement in your region, to maintain participation with AKKF programs. 
  • Work with internal Kookaburra Kids teams to ensure effective delivery according to our partnership agreement across the organisation. 
  • Deliver day to day account management of partner relationship with Wellways Australia 
  • Manage benefit delivery, tracking of benefits and support Wellways to leverage all available to them via our agreement. 

About you:

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Certificate III in Community Services or other associated mental health related discipline and/or demonstrated industry experience. 
  • Current First Aid certificate. 
  • Current Working With Children’s Check (QLD).
  • National Police Check Clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a similar role, or experience working with and supporting large groups of young people aged between 8-18 years. 
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and coordinating recreational programs. 
  • Understanding of Work Health and Safety and risk management requirements. 

Desirable:

  • Experience in the Not-for-Profit sector and working with young people. 
  • Experience in the Mental Health sector.  
  • Previous experience in engaging with a volunteer team. 
  • Trauma Informed Practice Training.
