The Youth Access Counsellor provides a high quality, early intervention response to young people and their families seeking support. The Youth Access Counsellor will provide assessment, psychological intervention and care coordination to young people and their families including the facilitation of referral to other community services as appropriate.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide initial engagement, bio-psychosocial (HEADSS) assessment, psychological intervention and care coordination for young people and their families.
  • Assess, plan and provide individually tailored one-to-one psychological intervention appropriate to young person needs.
  • Monitor high-risk clients and ensure prompt appropriate assessment, management and follow up support is provided.
  • Provide information, support and psycho-educational content to young people and families accessing the service via phone and walk-ins.
  • Undertake the intake process for new referrals, including management of duty register, allocation and follow up, as requested.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and registration with AHPRA or membership with an appropriate professional body.
  • At least 1 years’ experience working in a clinical environment with young people living with mild to moderate mental health issues including completion of mental health assessments, cognitive behavioural interventions, interpersonal psychotherapy and family-based interventions. 
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical care of young people presenting with various mental health presentations including, but not limited to, anxiety and depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation and co-morbidities such as alcohol and other drug issues; young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness; young people identifying as LGBTI; and young people with other barriers to accessing mental health support.
  • Have a current National Police Clearance. 
  • Working with Children Check.
  • Current eligibility to work within Australia.
  • Have a current Driver’s License
