This is a nine (9) month fixed term, part-time (0.4FTE) position commencing Term 3, 2024  

Como Secondary College (SC) is seeking a dedicated person to join our school in the role of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO). The goal of this role is to engage all our students in their education.

The AIEO will provide hands-on academic and pastoral care support as part of a strong, collaborative Student Services team, focussing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those at risk. The successful applicant should be organised, friendly, caring and professional with a commitment to building positive relationships with and between students, parents, staff and the wider community.

You will assist teachers to deliver planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. You will assist students to access the educational program and have an increased understanding of the multi-cultural nature of the learning environment. The AIEO will take a role in identifying and supervising suitable support programs for students. The successful applicant should adhere to school protocols and practices, and be well-organised.

As an AIEO, you should establish strong working relationships with families in our local community, creating connections with the school. You will ideally have effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with a wide range of people including students and their families, school and Department of Education staff, community providers and other community members and organisations, sharing your understanding of Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander culture. The successful applicant will liaise between the community and the school to provide communication and support; this may include home visits. They will also ideally have the computer skills required to use our online system; previous use of SEQTA or a similar system will be desirable.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
  • Ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
  • Ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Aboriginality is considered essential for this position under section 50(d) of the Western Australian Equal Opportunity Act.

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
